Hello, Our laptop is running very slow when we launch MSN. I can't find a defination on the line 021 section entry. Here is the log, please advise. Thanks

Firstly, I'd like you to run HijackThis from a permanent folder so the backup feature works correctly. At the moment it's residing in a temp folder where the backups (and program) will be lost during this fix.

For ease, you can download a self extracting copy of the program from here.

Once downloaded, double-click the file and then click the unZip button to install the program.

It will install to your C:\Program Files\HijackThis\ folder by default.


Secondly, I see you have the MyWay Search assistant installed courtesy of Dell. Although not a danger itself, the company who provide it, are involved in adware projects. Personally, I'd remove it as a matter of principle but the decision is yours. See the two links below for further info:

Step 1

Download Killbox to your desktop.

Download and install System Security Suite.

Download, install and scan with Ad-Aware SE by following the instructions here. Quarantine everything it finds.


Step 2

Run HJT again and checkmark the boxes next to the following:-

O21 - SSODL: Perfmfc - {BFBC495C-8B06-4281-83BA-B4B78B8BEB55} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\calchk.dll

Close ALL OPEN WINDOWS/BROWSERS and click Fix Checked


Step 3

Close ALL other windows and open System Security Suite.

• On the Items to Clear tab select Cookies & Temporary Files under Internet Explorer.
• Select Temporary Files & Recycle Bin under My Computer.
• Press the Clear Selected Items button.
• Decline to restart the machine when prompted.

Step 4

Double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.

• Click on "Delete on Reboot".
• Paste the filepath below into the "Full Path of File to Delete field".
• C:\WINDOWS\system32\calchk.dll
• Click on the "End Explorer Shell While Killing File checkbox.
• Click on the "Unregister .dll Before Deleting" checkbox (if not greyed out).
• Click the red Delete File button which looks like a stop sign.
• Click Yes when asked to confirm the deletion on reboot.
• Click No at the Pending operations prompt and Killbox should reboot the machine automatically.
• If not, just reboot manually.

Step 5

Then run either of the following online virus scans with Internet Explorer (saving the scan report when complete):

Kaspersky On-line Scanner

• Accept the Active X object and download the latest definitions.
• When the scanner is ready, click Scan Settings.
• Select the Extended anti-virus database.
• Select Scan Archives & Scan Mail Bases and then ok.
• Click My Computer to run a full system scan.
• When complete, choose Save as Text and save the log to your desktop.

Panda ActiveScan

• Once on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button and then the Check Now button on the nex screen.
• Enter your details in the required fields.
• Then click the big Scan Now button.
• Allow the Active X component to install and download the necessary files. (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
• When the download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan.
• Upon scan completion, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Step 6

Then post a fresh HJT log and the online scan results please.
