Hello hammerjammer...

The next time you get a BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death), write down any and all numbers that are listed on the screen...these are stop error codes and will help us troubleshoot the problem.

Also, click Start, then Run, and type eventvwr.msc...click "Ok". Click on "System" in the left pane and look for any red "notifiers" in the right pane. See if there are any that occur at about the same time as one of your restarts.

There is also a possibility that this may be malware related, but let's have a look at the system errors first.

Click Start, then Run, type control in the box, and click "Ok"

Double click on "Add or Remove Programs" and scroll to the bottom of the list. Is "Windows XP Service Pack 2" listed near the bottom?

Please download, install, and run HiJackThis. Choose "Do a system scan and save a log file" and copy/paste the log here for me.

hammerjammer...

You have a couple of entries in the log that indicate malware...Please go to the Malware Forum and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the Start Here.

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself, then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum. Be patient, the Malware Forum is a very busy place and a two or three day wait is not unusual. DO NOT REPLY TO OR BUMP YOUR OWN LOG. If it shows a reply it may be overlooked as one that is being worked on.

Once you have run the programs under the Start Here link and have posted a log for the malware experts, post me a fresh HiJackThis log to look at.

hammerjammer...

There are still entries in the HJT log that are best dealt with by the experts in malware. Did you atart a topic in that forum?

It appears you have more than one firewall on the machine as well...I see McAfee and Webroot firewalls...is the Windows firewall running , too? Let's disable the Webroot Firewall (It's not that great a firewall to begin with). Click Start then Run, and type msconfig in the box...click "Ok". Click on the "Startup" tab. Look in the list for an entry for Webroot and uncheck the box next to it (there may be more than one entry). Then click on the "Services" tab and find Webroot Desktop Firewall and uncheck the box next to it, too. Click "Apply" then "Ok". Restart your machine.

Upon restart, you will see a "Selective Startup" dialog box...this is normal. Check the box in the lower left corner and click "Ok".

Let me know if this helps the random restarts.
