Alright, so we got the annoying pop-ups known as WinFixer, and my brother came over and took care of it. He also showed us how to prevent it, and this consisted of deleting cookies and the temporary internet files (online and offline), and running both Spybot and Ad-Aware to finish up. So, for a while WinFix was gone. However, it showed up again, and a short while ago I had the pleasure of having to restart my computer because of a huge surge of ads for Forbes magazine was flooding the browser and Spyware Doctor (something my brother installed) popped up automatically, warning of 129 infections.

I restarted, cleaned it up as normal and came here. So far, it hasn't repeated, but the usual ads for WinFix and WinAntiVirus.

I've tried carefully going through Hijack This, but I haven't been able to get rid of it. Here is my log.

Thank you for the timely response, however it seems I cannot get any sort of GUI in Safe Mode. The screen remains blank while I log into a username (any username, I'm on Windows XP if that helps) except for the four corners that say "Safe Mode Activated" or something akin. I can still use ctrl-alt-del to call up the Task Manager though.

Am I doing something wrong?

This in fact is a common problem with systems that have been infected with the Vundo trojan:


Please try the following:

1. Boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt. When you are fully in safe mode with command prompt a CMD window will open.

2. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delet keys all at the same time to open up task manager.

3. When task manager opens Click File> New Task (Run...).

4. Then browse to the VundoFix folder on your desktop. It will be in the following location: C:\Documents and Settings\"Your User Name"\Desktop\VundoFix

5. Once in the VundoFix folder, double click on KillVundo.bat

• First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
  
  • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
  • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
  • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
  • Close the window with ok
• Please RUN HijackThis.
  . Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
  
  
• Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
  • Press Enter.
• Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

• Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE
  
  
• Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.

Please repost your HJT log in single space format because the current double space format in which it is posted makes any analysis very difficult.

To remove the double spacing in your log, please do the following:

• Please go to Start >> Run... and type notepad.exe
• Hit OK.
• Now go to Format and uncheck WordWrap.
• Close Notepad.
