Hi People!

I have an XP system connected to a router via a wireless connection. The router is connected to the modem, which is connected to the broadband. Everything has been working fine for 8 months. All of a sudden on saturday, my computer disconnected from the internet and since, hasn't been able to 'find a network ID'. USually when this happens, I right click on the connection in the systems tray and 'repair', and it disconnects and refreshes the cache, assigns a network ID and its fixed. IT has been offline since.

I believe the problem is with the router. This is why:

1) I have tried connecting my computer using an ethernet cable directly to the router, but this still doesnt work, ruling out wireless trouble. I cannot even access the router page when connected to the router by cable.
2) Connecting the computer directly to the modem does work.

Other things I've tried:

ipconfig release and renew, worked when connected to modem, but not to router.
device manager- all my network adapters are 'working'
Tried stopping and restarting the DHCP client
and called my broadband provider, who working through the problem said its a problem with my router.

Other information that may be of use: I have symantec antivirus, a week ago I ran spybot and deleted some recommended spyware, two of which were 'windows' security things, but as they were recognised by spybot I deleted them. I have just 'undone' thos changes, in case it was that (but why would it have a delayed effect of 3 days to cut me off?)

I have tried resetting the router configurations to factory settings. I am not sure what to do!

Any help would be most appreciated!!! I can't leave my computer in my flatmate's room forever where the modem is!!

Short of resetting to factory defaults and just feeding it your ISP usename and password (plus whatever else is needed) and then getting it to connect, there's not much else you can do.

You know your line is good, your separate modem works and you've ruled out wireless and wired.

What are the lights on the router doing? Most routers will try to connect to your broadband provider regardless of whether the phone cable is plugged in or not.
