nic installed and i want to install firewire

ok, a couple of weeks ago i tried to install an adaptec firewire card to be able to connect my new camcorder to the computer for video editing. WOW, what a pandora's box did i open then!
apparently there might have been a major conflict and it locked my entire system up so bad that i said what the h*** and ended up taking the firewire card out of my system. well........suddenly i couldn't even start up my computer. after a lot of time spent with dell support we came to the conclusion that i had to reformat my computer. i am connected to the net via my Intel® pro/100 nic. is there somthing that i should do BEFORE installing the ieee1394 card again. sure would HATE to go through all that again!

any help or advice would be sooooooooooooooooooooo appreciated!
