I have a Sony Vaio PCV-RX580 that has officially ceased being able to keep up with the graphics-intensive games my 7-year old plays (and I want a new computer but have been officially denied by the boxx). As such, I want to see what I can do to upgrade this box.

I would like to start looking at a new processor. The current processor is an intel P4-1.8Ghz 478 Pin residing on an ASUS P4B-LX motherboard with a 400 MHz FSB and an i845 chipset. I've attached a system scan report text file for anyone who is interested in learning more about my system than i can possibly understand.

What can I upgrade my processor to? Basically, what would work in my system and what options are out there for me.

I would also like to get a new video card, but am basically unsure where to start. I believe I have an AGP-slot, but am not sure if it is "integrated" or not. If it is "integrated," I assume that means that Sony has welded something into my only AGP slot meaning I'd have to suck up a PCI slot to put a new video card in.

I'd also love to update the memory, but from what I understand, my motherboard has a maximum 512Mb allowance and I already have that. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to what you experts have to offer in regards to how I can upgrade this old machine (old being Winter 2001) into something that will last me another few years until I can get a new computer.

This is just my opinion. This puter is maxed out to where you can go. By the time you found a MB that would fit the cost of a new Mb, cpu, memory, and graphics card you will have spent as much as a new puter would cost. The processor might be upgraded to a 2.2(not much of an improvement), you are still stuck with PC133 memory, the TNT2 graphics card is woefully inadequate and you probably only have a 250watt power supply.

A kit like tigerdirects barebones would be a much better start.

Even this kit is slightly inadequate already as it is the socket 478 type with a celeron cpu. By the time you added a intel 3.0 cpu, matched pair of 256 DDR400 memory, and a 128 mb graphics card you would have almost $500 in the puter.

this kit is good but you would have close to $600 in it with a good SLI video card setup and a dvd-rw.

go with the 2nd one if you can. Celerons are crap.
