So I went to a lyrics website the other day and it downloaded tons and tons of spyware to the point that I couldn't do anything on my computer for an hour. I have removed a lot of the stuff at this point but I'm still getting random pop-ups and my IE browser will close for no reason sometimes. I've run all my spyware programs at least 10 times but the stuff just keeps coming back. Please help!

Hi racchl

Please disable System Restore by right-clicking the My Computer icon on the desktop - go to Properties and then the System Restore tab. Put a tick in the box "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Apply. OK.

Disable Spybot's Teatimer as per the details on this site: http://russelltexas....re/teatimer.htm
It can interfere with some removals. You can restart it and System Restore when your system is cleaned up.

Do an on-line virus scan here http://www.pandasoft...com/activescan/ Make sure that Repair/fix and heuristics are checked. Let it fix everything it can. Reboot if required. You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

Download and install The Cleaner from http://www.moosoft.com/ Install the program and update as instructed on the website. Let it fix everything it finds. Reboot if required.

Download and install Adaware from the link in the page if you don't already have it.
http://www.geekstogo..._Log-t2852.html

Follow the instructions on that page for configuring the program to do a full system scan. Reboot after the scan whether Adaware tells you to or not.

These actions will remove some of the things in the log. Post a new HijackThis log in this thread so we can have a look at it.

Hi rrachl

You may need to print this out or copy and paste into a Notepad file so you can keep track of the deletions when you are working in Safe Mode and not connected to the internet.

Open HijackThis and click on "Open Misc Tools Section" and "Open Process Manager"

Find these processes in the list, select each one seperately and click on "Kill Process" until you have done them all. Read the name very carefully as there may be some names that are similar but that are genuine files.

msupd5.exe
qmanonyf.exe
wvrwgv.exe
adl_mteststub.exe
SysCheckBop32.exe
dlsmgr.exe
AdStatus Service\AdStatServ.exe
AdStatus Service\AdStatKeep.exe
bbc20.exe
packager.exe
wsxsvc.exe
vmss.exe

Then click on Back which will open the HijackThis Scan Screen. Click on Scan. When the scan is complete check all the following items. Then disconnect from the internet and close all open windows including this browser window and all instant messaging - Yahoo messenger, MSN messenger, ICQ and anything else that is not essential and click on Fix checked.

Reboot into Safe Mode by continually tapping the F8 key as soon as the computer starts to boot up - after the beep. When the Windows XP Safe Mode menu comes up - Choose Safe Mode. You don't need any networking.

*Display the contents of system folders
Uncheck:*Hide protected operating system files
Set search options
Next go to Search > All files and folders > More advanced options and click.

Be sure the first three boxes are selected:*Search System folders
*Search Hidden Files and folders
*Search SubFolders
Delete all the files and folders noted in bold below. Some may not be there but use the search function in Windows Explorer to make sure.

C:\WINDOWS\ ZServ.dll file only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ lqfqrdaa.dll file only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ kxpvsokn.dll file only
C:\WINDOWS\ ufud.exe file only

Hi Rrachl

You've got rid of most of it - just a few more things to go. Print this out or copy and paste into a Notepad file, as you did before, so you can keep track of the deletions when you are working in Safe Mode and not connected to the internet.

Open HijackThis and click on "Open Misc Tools Section" and "Open Process Manager"

Find this process in the list, select it and click on "Kill Process". Read the name very carefully as there may be some names that are similar but that are genuine files.

wvrwgv.exe
win32084413517390.exe

I'm having trouble deleting wvrwgv.exe. Sometimes it doesn't show up in HijackThis and then also when I try to delete it in Safe Mode it says "access denied."

are you "sure" your in safe mode.... if so hit Alt-Ctrl-Del and bring up the Taskmanager and see if that is running under "Processes" tab, if so right click and then hit "End Process" and then delete it in safe mode but it should delete.

Hi rrchal

There are times when a file is difficult to delete and there are ways to delete these files.

Edited - I asked for a hijackthis log and you've already posted one. I'll get back to you shortly after I've had a chance to look at it.

Hi rrachl

Are you able to find that file in Internet Explorer in normal mode.

If you can - right click and see if you are able to change the name - rename it wvrwgv.txt. If you can't then check the Properties.

Right click the file and go to Properties. There are 5 tabs in the Properties screen.

General: tells you the type of file and size. At the bottom it shows Attributes. If Read Only and/or Hidden is ticked. Untick them

Version: tells you the version and Company that made the file. In most malware files there isn't much on this tab.

Compatibility: is irrelevant as it usually doesn't note anything.

Security: Lists the User Names. Make sure that your computer name and \Administrators and \Power users are listed in the top box. In the bottom box will be listed the Permissions for Administrators. You need Green ticks in all boxes except Special Permissions if Administrators and Power Users are listed at the top and the computer name is correct. If they aren't listed then we might need to change the ownership of the file.

Summary tab: should be irrelevant in determining ownership of the file.

If you can't find it in normal mode then try in Safe Mode and check for the same thing.

Otherwise we'll remove it with a special removal program. But I'd rather try normal methods first. Let me know what you can find out.

The sucker doesn't want to leave. I thought I had deleted it a couple times after renaming it and logging off and coming back and deleting it, but every time I thought it was gone it would come back under its original name.

Hi rrachl

As you managed to delete it a couple of times and it came back, there is something preventing it's removal or reloading it.

Reboot into Safe Mode by continually tapping the F8 key as soon as the computer starts to boot up - after the beep. When the Windows XP Safe Mode menu comes up - Choose Safe Mode.

Open Windows Explorer and go to > Tools> Folder Options> View, select:

*Show hidden files and folders
*Display the contents of system folders

Uncheck:

*Hide protected operating system files

Set search options
Next go to Search > All files and folders > More advanced options and click.

Be sure the first three boxes are selected:

*Search System folders
*Search Hidden Files and folders
*Search SubFolders

Do a search for [/b]wvrwgv.exe[/b] and delete every instance that shows up in the search.

Reboot into normal mode. Do another full scan with The Cleaner and make a note of anything it finds then have it fix it.

Do an online virus scan here http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ Make a note of anything it finds and then have it fix it.

Post the details of anything that couldn't be fixed along with a new HijackThis log.
