Two days ago I had something happen to my computer, I had scanned a file and no virus was detected (no updates since august, need new subscription). I had opened the file and nothing happened, I felt foolish when I shut down to restart that I had noticed winsupdater.exe was still trying to run. So, after finding this place and reading a post, I had found both winsupdater.exe and winlog.exe. I can't quarantee them or delete them and I can seem to find a way to stop them from running or being locked. I need to find a simple way of disposing of them (my computer is a dell inspirion 4100, I forgot how to run safe mode). Please help!

Nevermind, I got rid of it.

Shut down > safe mode > winsupdater.exe and winlog.exe sent to recycle bin and deleted > shut down > boot normal mode.

Please go to the malware forum and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the CLICK HERE .

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.

Sometimes, simply deleting a file doesn't clear up the infections on the computers. I would suggest following the above post, and having one of our Staff members check things out just to be 100% certain!

From what I have seen on various antispyware forums such as this one,
"Winsupdater" is NOT so easily removed by the steps you have taken.
Personally, I would not allow any Symantec/Norton product on my
computer nowadays and seriously doubt they have any "Removal Tool"
to completely remove the 2 "items" you say you have or still might have
on your computer. Would encourage you to post a HijackThis log in the
"Malware Removal" forum .
Your HijackThis log shows you have "Weatherbug", which SOME antispyware
forums consider spyware; would encourage you to check the info at :
www.pchell.com/support/weatherbug.shtml .
You Sun Java is 2 Updates behind; all your current version(s) should be
uninstalled and their latest version gotten from www.java.com BUT ONLY
AFTER A HIJACKTHIS EXPERT SAYS YOU ARE "CLEAN".
