cd burning mishaps

I have an external cd writer that doesn't seem to work. Whenever I attempt to burn a cd it results in a corrupt cd, or the burn stops with a reported driver error somewhere in the last two songs, or my comptuer shuts down entirely.

I was using realone 8. I switched to Nero and then tried Real player 10. Same problems

I updated my drivers and got one cd to burn with no issues. However, nothing else would burn after that. I re-loaded the driver and got another cd to work, almost, it cut off the last 20 seconds of the last song, and then nothing would burn again.

I'm not sure what else to try ...
