I am running XP Pro and the first problem I am having is that the system hangs intermittently. Sometimes if I wait 5-10 minutes, things will suddenly start opening and closing. If I hit CTRL-ESC, applications that I have clicked on after the freeze will appear on the screen and then freeze up. If it hangs too long, I shut down the computer manually.

The second problem is with Outlook. After I enter my password, it starts receiving mail. When it is finished, it hangs. If I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, the cursor pops up and lets me continue.

The last problem is with the Interwise program. Everytime I try to join or view an event, the error message "student.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." My son missed 15 minutes of a class on Sunday because we couldn't enter the event. The program was running fine the week before last. I downloaded the Interwise program to my laptop to view the missed class and it runs fine there.

I am posting all three problems because I don't know if they are related.

I ran a full scan on Ad-aware and Spybot. I checked for viruses with McAfee (which I have currently uninstalled), AVG free, and TrendMicro. I ran TDS-3 and adn CW Shredder. I reinstalled Windows a few days ago and have also reinstalled all updates including SP2.

My HijackThis log is attached. I would appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks,
Ilana

Hi there,
Please set your system to show all files; see here for how to do this if you're unsure.

The following are mandatory fixes:
Close all programs down, leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against the following items:

O2 - BHO: OpenSite.CBrowserHelper - {30A56549-9D5B-4D34-AFA7-440A7F0538A9} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Cicrosoft Special] bay.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: see here if you don't know how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

bay.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we'll take another look.

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN :tazz:

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use) Click Here.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox Posted Image.
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. ;)
