Dear djnfl, :tazz:

Welcome to the Geeks to Go forums.

We are currently studying your log. :)
*************************************

Dear djnfl, I see that you are running two anti-virus programs (AVG and Norton).

Can you tell me in detail if your yearly subscription to your Norton Antivirus software has expired?
Can you tell me in detail what version of Norton Antivirus software you have on your computer?
Can you tell me in detail if the the AVG antivirus software software you have on your computer is the "free" version or the "paid" version?
**********************************

You are currently running HijackThis from a temporary folder. Since HijackThis makes backups of any entries you fix, you should create a folder just to hold the HijackThis program and its backups, so the backups and the program are not accidentally deleted. Go to "My Computer", click on c:\ and then go to the "File" menu, choose New -> Folder. Name the folder "HJT" or "HijackThis" and then please move the "HijackThis.exe" executable there.

Please restart your computer and then post a new HijackThis log. :)

Thank you Rambro for answering my posts. In answer to your questions:
I have just received the Norton so no it has not expired but it is the 2005 version...just the regular verson. The AVG that I have is through a license as an educator through a local educational cooperative where they receive a certain number of "copies". I am assuming it was a paid copy but it is over a new old.

This is the copy of the new hijack this log:

Dear djnfl, :tazz:

I notice that you are using more than one antivirus program. This is very dangerous, as multiple AVs can interfere with one another and actually allow MORE viruses to get through. I strongly suggest you either (1) configure only one antivirus program to enable automatic realtime scanning, and leave the rest disabled most of the time, or (2) go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all but one antivirus program.

Thank you Rambro! I disabled the automatic daily scan on AVG. How do I disable the entire thing without deleting it? I would prefer to at least keep it around just in case (my license is good until 2007) but would prefer to keep my Norton as 1st choice.

After the last restart, my computer is still running very slow. It seems to take much too long for a page to pull up. I'm sure I have a lot of things running in the background but it just takes so long. The scans still have I have adware.

Here is the most recent hijack this log:

Dear djnfl, :tazz:

I was conferring with a member from the geekstogo forum about the disabling of the AVG antivirus software on your computer.

Here's how to turn off AVG:

1) Click on the AVG taskbar icon.

2) Click on AVG Resident Shield.

3) Click on Properties for Resident Shield at the bottom pane.

4) Under both tabs uncheck everything.

5) Click OK then exit AVG.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :)

Dear djnfl, :tazz:

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
******************************

Dear djnfl, can you tell me in detail who your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is?

Optional Fixes

Dear djnfl, the following lines are optional fixes to stop unnecessary programs from running on startup, which may increase computer system performance. I highly recommend you to fix these items:

mmtask.exe - Part of MusicMatch Jukebox - digital music player / CD burner and ripper / music organizer / playlist creator. If you want this feature then don't fix this line.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mmtask] c:\Program Files\MusicMatch\MusicMatch Jukebox\mmtask.exe

hkcmd.exe - Installed by the Intel 810 and 815 chipset graphic drivers. If you want the Ctrl Alt F12 or similar keypresses to access Intel's customised graphics properties, you need it, otherwise not. Can be disabled via Control Panel -> Display Properties. If you want this feature then don't fix this line.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe

msmsgs.exe - Windows Messenger utility. If you don\'t use Windows Messenger, this can be annoying. Available via Start -> Programs. Go to Windows Messenger -> Tools -> Options -> Preferences and uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts". Please fix this line, because this program can be run other than in startup and this will increase the performance of your computer.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

qttask.exe - This is is a task tray icon which is used as a shortcut to a number of QuickTime related features. You really don't need this in your system tray. It is safe to remove this from your startup. QuickTime's most common purpose is for watching movies commonly in the .mov format. Please fix this line, because this program can be run other than in startup and this will increase the performance of your computer.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

igfxtray.exe - Quick access to the control panel via a System Tray icon for graphics based upon the Intel chipsets (ie, i810). These chipsets are often included on motherboards. Available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel. Please fix this line, because this program can be run other than in startup and this will increase the performance of your computer.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe

Adobe Gamma Loader.exe - Adjusts monitor colours across all programs, including Photoshop. It is needed by some graphics professionals who want their monitor calibrated. Most home users will not need it. If you want this feature then don't fix this line.

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.exe.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe

Osa.exe - Application which launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. It's somewhat of a resource hog, and some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it usually isn't required - Note: if you make use of the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar outside an office program this application will need to be enabled for it to show. If you want this feature then don't fix this line.

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" button to finish the repair. Close the HijackThis application.

Please reboot your computer into Safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu). For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site: http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Next, make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files. Here is how to do this:

Windows XP

* Click "Start".
* Open "My Computer".
* Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
* Select the "View" Tab.
* Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
* Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
* Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
* Click "Yes" to confirm.
* Click "OK".

Here is a link for further explanation: http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

Delete the following file/files marked in blue (if they exist):

svhosint32.exe (Note: Do a search for this file and then delete it.)

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Restart your computer in normal mode, and then please post a new HijackThis log.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :)

Rambro,

I'm not a real happy camper at this point. I have been working ALL day trying to undo damage and it all came with Panda. #1 thing is that it forced me to remove AVG totally from my computer before it would scan. Against my better judgement, I did it. Then it totally froze up my computer. It would boot up and freeze. It would go to my wallpaper but would freeze before it put up my icons. It would do NOTHING. I would reboot and it would repeat. I tried everything. In the end, I booted up in safe mode and did a restoration. I don't know what you want me to do now. Please advise and I will wait to hear from you.

Thank you,
djnfl

Dear djnfl, :tazz:

Well, I was going to ask you to remove the AVG antivirus software from your computer anyway, you only need one antivirus software program on your computer.

Next, if you are having trouble with the Panda online scan, skip that step and move on to the rest of the post. Once you have completed the steps in the post. Restart your computer and post a new Hijackthis log (if possible).

I just checked and I have 42 processes running now...and I'm doing NOTHING. Isn't that a lot?

Also, I tried to remove AVG and it wouldn't let me. It said it was a general failure...I tried in my control panel "add/remove program" option and I also tried with start...all programs...AVG...uninstall and it too said general failure. It does nothing when I try to open the program with the desktop icon.

Also...I have never run AOL on this computer yet it is showing up in lists and is still on my programs on "add/remove" on my control panel. It does say when I try to remove it that there is not an AOL program installed but it will not remove it from the list.

Thanks,
djnfl

A small internet provider who I'm sure is serviced by a larger provider. My provider is Sat-co.net.

Does the South Arkansas Telephone Company (SAT-CO.NET) provide dialup or DSL service to you?

Please respond in detail.
