I have just received the Norton so no it has not expired but it is the 2005 version...just the regular verson. The AVG that I have is through a license as an educator through a local educational cooperative where they receive a certain number of "copies". I am assuming it was a paid copy but it is over a new old.

I notice that you are using more than one antivirus program. This is very dangerous, as multiple AVs can interfere with one another and actually allow MORE viruses to get through. I strongly suggest you either (1) configure only one antivirus program to enable automatic realtime scanning, and leave the rest disabled most of the time, or (2) go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all but one antivirus program.

Thank you Rambro! I disabled the automatic daily scan on AVG. How do I disable the entire thing without deleting it? I would prefer to at least keep it around just in case (my license is good until 2007) but would prefer to keep my Norton as 1st choice.

After the last restart, my computer is still running very slow. It seems to take much too long for a page to pull up. I'm sure I have a lot of things running in the background but it just takes so long. The scans still have I have adware.

1) Click on the AVG taskbar icon.

2) Click on AVG Resident Shield.

qttask.exe - This is is a task tray icon which is used as a shortcut to a number of QuickTime related features. You really don't need this in your system tray. It is safe to remove this from your startup. QuickTime's most common purpose is for watching movies commonly in the .mov format. Please fix this line, because this program can be run other than in startup and this will increase the performance of your computer.

igfxtray.exe - Quick access to the control panel via a System Tray icon for graphics based upon the Intel chipsets (ie, i810). These chipsets are often included on motherboards. Osa.exe - Application which launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. It's somewhat of a resource hog, and some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it usually isn't required - Note: if you make use of the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar outside an office program this application will need to be enabled for it to show. If you want this feature then don't fix this line.

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" button to finish the repair. Close the HijackThis application.

Next, make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files. Here is how to do this:

I'm not a real happy camper at this point. I have been working ALL day trying to undo damage and it all came with Panda. #1 thing is that it forced me to remove AVG totally from my computer before it would scan. Against my better judgement, I did it. Then it totally froze up my computer. It would boot up and freeze. It would go to my wallpaper but would freeze before it put up my icons. It would do NOTHING. I would reboot and it would repeat. I tried everything. In the end, I booted up in safe mode and did a restoration. I don't know what you want me to do now. Please advise and I will wait to hear from you.

Well, I was going to ask you to remove the AVG antivirus software from your computer anyway, you only need one antivirus software program on your computer.

Next, if you are having trouble with the Panda online scan, skip that step and move on to the rest of the post. Once you have completed the steps in the post. Restart your computer and post a new Hijackthis log (if possible).

I just checked and I have 42 processes running now...and I'm doing NOTHING. Isn't that a lot?

Also, I tried to remove AVG and it wouldn't let me. It said it was a general failure...I tried in my control panel "add/remove program" option and I also tried with start...all programs...AVG...uninstall and it too said general failure. It does nothing when I try to open the program with the desktop icon.

Also...I have never run AOL on this computer yet it is showing up in lists and is still on my programs on "add/remove" on my control panel. It does say when I try to remove it that there is not an AOL program installed but it will not remove it from the list.

Go to Windows Messenger -> Tools -> Options -> Preferences and uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts". Please fix this line, because this program can be run other than in startup and this will increase the performance of your computer.

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" button to finish the repair. Close the HijackThis application.

Next, make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files. Here is how to do this:

Windows XP

* Click "Start".
* Open "My Computer".
* Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
* Select the "View" Tab.
* Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
* Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
* Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
* Click "Yes" to confirm.
* Click "OK".

Delete the following folder/folders marked in blue (if they exist):

C:\Program Files\Grisoft

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Restart your computer in normal mode, and then please post a new HijackThis log.
