Hi,

If someone would take a look at this I'd be very grateful.

Over the last week or so my PC (windows XP Pro SP2) has on a couple of occasions made unexpected sounds (definitely "software" sounds, not mechanical grinding!) Also, sometimes (but not always) the PC will not shut down; the only time this has happened since I became suspicious, the error message was that a program "dwwin.exe" would not terminate.

I suspect some kind of malware, most likely picked up via MSN which I use a lot - about a week ago it had 5 minutes of doing the most peculiar things, inserting random text into a conversation. Anyway.

I have looked at http://www.geekstogo...?showtopic=2852 and done most of the steps there, before creating the Hijackthis log below:
- downloaded and ran Cleanup
- downloaded and ran Adaware
- downloaded and ran CWShredder
- downloaded and ran Spybot

I already have AVG and it is fully up to date and running normally, so I didn't download or run any of the anti-virus programs.

- I did a Windows update

... and rebooted.

As I say I'd really appreciate any help anyone can give me here! Thank you in advance

Hi smudges and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log. We are sorry that it has taken us so long to get to your log but , as you probably have noticed already, we have been having problems with our site.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
    O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.r...ip/RdxIE601.cab

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

    C:\WINDOWS\ALCMTR.EXE
ALCXMNTR.EXE<==You will have to Search for this one

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.
Regards,

Trevuren

Your currentlog is malware free. I suggest doing a scan of your entire system just to be sure:

A. I need you to download MWav to a convenient location.

This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything.
I need you to run MWav by double-clicking on mwav.exe. This scan only produces a report, it doesn't clean your system. I will analyze the report and recommend a course of action depending on the results.

Put a check next to the below items before scanning:
  • Memory

  • Include Sub-Directory
  • Scan All Files
Please make sure ALL of these are checked, then press the Scan button. This typically will take hours to complete.

**NOTE*** Sometimes MWav will pause and it appears to be finished, but it isn't done. Just let it run until it says it's complete.

On the bottom portion of the window, you will see the lower panel where MWav is listing "infected items", please highlight everything in that lower panel and copy them by holding CTRL + C then paste it here. The whole log will be extremely BIG so there is no way to post the log. I just need the infected items list.

Please also include a fresh HJT log.

Trevuren

Hi Trevuren. I decided to run the MWAV overnight, hence the slight delay in getting back to you!

Part way through, MWAV put up a message

Spyware/adware detected!!! you will need to buy eScan or this tool in order to eliminate this Spyware / Adware from you system. Click on BUY THIS PRODUCT button to go to our webstore ...

I didn't do this - I just OK'd and it carried on with the scan. Here is its "Virus Log Information".

There's one other thing that may be significant? It may be completely unrelated but dating from about the same time, my MS office applications (Word and Excel and Access) now don't automatically delete their temp files (the .TMP ones created for each SAVE operation for the first two, and the .LDB database locks file for Access). If this is meaningful to you then please forgive me for not mentioning it before, it only just occurred to me! If it's some unrelated thing and down to me setting something wrong somewhere please ignore this ...

Thanks again for your time!

1. Your log is still malware free :tazz:

2. The Temp File deletion problem is, in my opinion, unrelated to the situation at hand.

3. Your MWAV report is excellent. Most of the entries refer to harmless orphaned registry entries.

4. The others, we will eliminate thus:

A. 1. Please download CWShredder. Download the stand alone version which is free
  • Check for Update
  • Click Fix.
  • Exit CWShredder.
2. REBOOT your system

B. Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note:In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select
    • "Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the "All Files" button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

    C:\Downloads\vnc-4_1_1-x86_win32.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

C. 1. Download, install, update, configure, and run Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06.
  • Download Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06:
  • Install Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06:
    • Double-click on aawsepersonal.exe to install the program.
    • Follow the default settings for installation.

========================================

Once all that is done, I am confident enough to say:

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:
  • Click Start. Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Right click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
  • Left click on "System Restore Tab"
  • Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Left click on "Apply"
REBOOT your system

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Right click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
  • Left click on "System Restore Tab".
  • Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Click on "Apply"
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Trevuren
