Hello,
Well I ran everything that is suggested on this site before making a new post. I thought I was in the clear but the mean little adserver showed its ugly face again. I have a Hijack this log and a Ewido file. Can someone help me lose this adserver for good. It is not limited to the adserver. It seems that I get the casino popups as well and others. I am running Norton antivirus coporate edition all definitions are up to date. I have bell south popup blocker and windows security popup blocker. I got spybot and Ad-Aware SE. I have XP professional edition with the Service Pck to loaded. Hopefully I added the logfiles correctly.

Regards
Keith

Edit - Excuse me for doing this, but it helps when I reveiew a thread.

Hello Keith and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Please download
CCleaner save it to the desktop.

Right click on this link Del 015 Domains.inf and choose Save (link) As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete this folder (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\Program Files\nrpn\

Close Windows Explorer

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Please note that you are running an out-of-date version of HijackThis; the latest version could reveal more than previous ones. Please download a new copy HijackThis unzip it, and replace your existing copy with the new version. Also create a folder on your C: drive for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe), and move HJT into it. This will stop the log being lost.

Copy everything inside the quote box below (starting with dir) and paste it into notepad. Go up to "File > Save As" and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as findfile.bat on your Desktop.

dir C:\WINDOWS\system32\?ttrib.exe /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Locate findfile.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the contents of that Notepad here along with a new HiJackThis log.

Hello Crusty,
I ran through the steps as you suggested. One thing I did not find was the 015 - Trusted Zone: * .af.mil. I also ran CCleaner in normal running mode not safe mode if it makes any difference.

Here is the Hijack file with the latest version.Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Hello again Keith

Well everything appears to have gone well.

Let's try this minor adjustment to your registry:

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete this file (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\?ttrib.exe

The ? in computer parlance means anything, hence I asked for clarification The ? will represent the letter A normally, but I want you to search for ?ttrib.exe, you will get two answers. The one I want you to delete is the one dated 11/28/2005 08:24 AM and is 401,408bytes or 392KB in size. Please do not make an error.

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally

Post back a fresh HijackThis log, from normal mode, and I will take another look. How is it running now?

Good Morning Crustyoldbloke!

To answer a question you had yesterday, I only run the system with one sign on. I use to have three but it seemed to be a problem so I shut them all down but the one main individual setting.

I deleted the R3 as requested, however I did not find the ?ttrib.exe. The only two that came up had the ATTRIB and were only 11K i size. When I looked at your reply yesterday I got hit with an Adserver. So far nothing today. Could this be part of my problem with the screen saver only working when the computer is set at the log in screen? Screen saver has not worked in a while, but I am not too concerned because I have a flat panel monitor. So I'm not worried about burning images into the screen.

Regards
Keith

Hello again Keith

Your latest HJT log is clean, but you were still getting adserver when you were reading my penultimate reply? I can't see anything in the fix that followed to alter it since it was just a tidy up. The ?ttrib file missing is OK as it is Purity Spring and we got the rest of it OK.

Please run this scan to be safe and if that is negative, I'll give you the all clear next reply.

Download:WinPFind

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder.

Restart normally and post the contents of WinPFind.txt

Hello crustyoldbloke,

The popups seem to have gone away. I haven't had one in a while. Tell me what you think of the WinPFind results.

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hello again Keith

I can see just one bad file lurking. Let’s get rid of it.

Download
Killbox by Option^Explicit

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.
  • Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
  • In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
  • Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\stcloader.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Go to Options > Delete on Reboot > Process ALL in list
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt.
If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Is everything still OK?

A final fresh HJT log please.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated. :)

I wish you happy safe surfing Keith!
