Hello DRB and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Download NoahDfear's smitRem.exe©. and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark or tick next to each of the following items:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [mwri] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\mwri\mwrim.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
O18 - Protocol: msnim - {828030A1-22C1-4009-854F-8E305202313F} - "C:\PROGRA~1\MSNMES~1\msgrapp.dll" (file missing)

Click Fix checked

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Please set your system to show all files;
please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvctrl.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mssearchnet.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpB468.tmp
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\QNS23MWT\WinAntiSpywareScannerInstall[1].exe

C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\mwri\ - folder

Exit Explorer

Open the smitRem.exe©. folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • If Ewido detects a bad file you will hear and see an alarm, select REMOVE
  • AND select "Perform action on all infections"
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop and post in to me in your reply.
Close Ewido
Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan.

Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Download SpyAxeFix.exe © noahdfear. Save it to your desktop.

Close all other programmes and windows. Double click SpyAxeFix.exe, then click Start to extract the tool to it's own folder.

Open the SpyAxeFix folder and double click the SpyAxeFix.bat to start the tool. At one point when the tool runs, your taskbar will dissappear, and your computer will restart when the tool completes.

A text file named spyaxe.txt will be created in the SpyAxeFix folder. Post the contents of that log please (4 logs please)

For those who haven't had the pleasure that Crusty Ol Bloke is worth his weight in gold!

P,

Everything so far seems to be running fine; I am just WAY slower than normal (?) and I have an annoying Norton Antivirus message that pops up saying Norton 2006 does not support the repair feature (?) There were a few items irregular to the instructions;

I could not find 04-HKCU\..\Run: [mwri]

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpB468.tmp AND C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\QNS23MWT\WinAntiSpywareScannerInstall[1].exe were not valid folders

I could not find C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\mwri\

I did not see an option to save the Ewido report after it scanned

I could not find the smitfiles.txt file

I hope I post by your instruction (new to this), I apologize for any ignorance. I cannot tell you how helpful you have been! Can you please email business and contact info for business in the future please? edited out email address

Hello again

Sorry, but I can’t let you write an email address in open forum. There are too many automatic email harvesters around. You would soon be getting 200 junk emails a day.

It is looking a lot better but your logs indicate a little more to do. I’ll attempt to automate as much as possible. It’s a shame I couldn’t see the Ewido log. When the Ewido scanner finishes, there are a couple of boxes that you can click to see a report and to save a report. Let’s see how this goes and then I can make a decision as to the best way forward. It is pointless doing a temporary fix; I prefer to make sure everything is good. I would however like you to perform a search for the smitfiles.txt and post it in your reply.

Firstly could you please disable Ewido Guard from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Open Ewido and remove the guard option. You may be required to reboot for the effect to take place.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWAS5_0001_LP51] "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\QNS23MWT\WinAntiSpywareScannerInstall[1].exe" -nag
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [mwri] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\mwri\mwrim.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.
  • Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
  • In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
  • Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\QNS23MWT\WinAntiSpywareScannerInstall[1].exe
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\mwri\mwrim.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Go to Options > Delete on Reboot > Process ALL in list
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt.
If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Reboot normally

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look.
