Hello everyone,

I am interested in watching the video versions of Diggnation, but I am having trouble finding a codec to play the M4V (and H.264) video file format! Media Player Classic and Quicktime Alternative has never failed me before. Even a google serach for "m4v codec" did not turn up much.

What (and where to download) codecs are people here using to watch M4V and H.264 encoded files? I know ffdshow allows this, but I have had problems with that codec and encoding and would like to explore other alternatives first.

Thanks for your time,
Tom

Hello and thanks for the post,

It is a cool program, my favorite new tech show is one from StepOne Productions, you can check out their website (and download the first couple episodes) at http://www.steponepro.com/. I will check out Quicktime 7, does the free version allow encoding of H.264? I bit the bullet and am using ffdshow as my decoder, but for encoding, the only option I stumbled on was a open source project called x264.

Cheers,
Tom

quicktime full version does encoding and decoding. free version just does decoding. whats the opensource project?

there are few podcasts that I listen to as well as iptv shows... all done by members or associates of the former screen savers crowd.

3 or 4 more I can think of.... just not clear enough at this time of night... lol. I do agree with Keven Rose that IP tv is the wave of the future.

Hey Starjax,

The project is called "x264" and is an open source H.264 encoder that is fairly active and, right now, appears to be the only free open source option available.

The developer page is at videolan.org: http://developers.vi...n.org/x264.html

Useful download page is at free-codecs: http://www.free-code...Video_Codec.htm

x264 development thread at Doom9: http://forum.doom9.o...10&page=3&pp=20

Looks like it has some promise and i need to check if the 2-pass code has been implemented yet.

Cheers,
Tom
