Recently my system crashed and I had to do an in-place install. Now I have (3) versions of the same XP Professional when my system boots.........My question, how do I move my files and programs from the none working OS to the new one I just installed. And is their a way to remove the previous XP installs?

Hi mkem!

Are you sure you have three versions of XP on your machine? How many hard drives/partitions do you have? Is there a WINDOWS directory in any/all of these? I'm thinking more along the lines of you have one version of XP installed, but the boot.ini thinks you have three installed.

So when you open MY COMPUTER, there is only a Local Disk C: listed? (Along with your CD-ROM and floppy drive of course). If this is the case, then you don't have three versions of XP installed, but just one.

Right click on MY COMPUTER and select PROPERTIES, then click on the ADVANCED tab, and then click on SETTINGS under the STARTUP & RECOVERY heading. Then click EDIT next to the line To edit the startup options file manually, click EDIT. Copy and paste in your next reply here what is listed and I will tell you what to change.

Remove these two lines:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\XP="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Once you have done that, reboot your computer and tell me how things are going.

You can't copy programs. These need to be reinstalled. Only things you can copy over are saved settings, documents, pictures, mp3s, etc...

If you don't have anything important on your computer and it can be completely wiped, I suggest you do that, because the fact that your computer at one time had 3 installations of XP on it, problems will undoubtedly arise.

Question, if I backup the things I want to keep onto a disk can I then wipe the system clean and load what I need from the disk. Or can I use the file and settings wizard to copy what I need?

What are you thinking of saving that you would need the files & settings wizard for?

I have my work vpn and remote desktop on the other side. I was able to copy it over to my current desktop.

Basically, I need this pc to run like new again, if I have to reinstall programs thats fine. But I need to keep my current work settings and vpn, etc.

Any advice you can give me would truly be appreciated

Most likely you will have to redo the settings for your work vpn and such. You can try using the FILE & SETTINGS TRANSFER WIZARD and see if that will save those settings, which it may, I just never have had a need to use it.
