[Autumn's Daddy]

I have a fair amount of experience fixing PC's and such, but am having a great deal of difficulty finding a single solution to the problem of ridding my friend's PC of the Start Page hijack that takes him to the updateyoursystem home page.

I notice there are a number of other outstanding queries on this subject both here and on other forums and am wondering if anyone is looking into a FIX?

I have found so-called fixes on other sites but they don't seem to work.

Do you know if this is because there a different "strains" of this malware, or because people are so busy fire-fighting it that one simply hasn't been created yet?

Any assistance or comments that are useful would be very much appreciated.

Hello

I spoke to my friend tonight and he tells me his machine is now clear of the Spyaxe problem!!!!

A colleague recommended he go to the Microsoft Website, where he was able to download a program that sorted the problem out for him.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE

It was their Anti Spyware software that he downloaded.

Apparently, the effect wasn't immediate.

They downloaded the Anti Spyware and ran it but the SPY AXE Problem only disappeared the next morning when they put the pc on again!

Don't know whether leaving it for a few hours is a prerequisite or not!

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.

• Install ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Download and install CleanUp! Here
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.


THE FIX

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Open up and run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
• When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

5. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

6. Open HiJack and do a scan.

7. Put a Check next to the following items:

Use start>Search to find these file(s):
windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

10. Run the program CleanUp!

11. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

12. Please post the Active scan log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

I managed to go online and update the Avast program / virus definitions

I'm running a scan using that right now.

This is because I couldn't get the ActiveScan process to work.

Perhaps the java processing element is switched off?

Windows Update website still shows a blank screen.

The PC itself was trying to download windows updates, got to about 54% before I took it offline to email you again.

Avast says there are no viruses.

Still waiting and hoping for a suggestion about XP functionality.

Main problems are

Java scripts don't run
Regedt32 doesn't run
Search doesn't run
Windows Update website comes up blank.

Launch Notepad

* Copy/paste the codebox below into a new text file.
* Save it as Options.txt on your Desktop.

RegSearch Options File

Now
Download Registry Search.zipby Bobbi Flekman and to your desktop. Right click it and select "extract all" click OK. This will create a folder on your desktop.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
Next
Open the regsearch folder and Doubleclick regsearch.exe to run it and click on "Import...". Select the file Options.txt from your desktop that you created earlier. Click "OK" and Registry Search will search the Registry and report what it finds. It will save the report as regsearch.txt in the regsearch folder.

reboot into normal mode andplease post the results

That's fine by me.

Thanks for your help making sure the SPyware/ Viruses are gone.

I think I'd already got rid of 'em, but your efforts mean I don't leave the PC with an edited version in MSCONFIG, which is a bonus and I'm very happy there's no sign of any malware.

I expect I'll be able to connect both PC's to my network soon (with confidence that nothing untoward is going to happen!).

Now, you were going to point me in the direction of a firewall.

Personally, I prefer something that translates what it's asking into English rather than saying a particular program or service wants to access the Internet and should I let it (Zone Alarm I found was terrible for this, when I tried it a couple of years ago. I ended up preventing things that should have had access from doing so and allowing things that shouldn't have had access, to do so).

I find the Windows XP Firewall pretty good like that, even if it isn't as effective as I would hope.
