It appears that I have been attacked by the same Malware as others on your site. I tried following their solutions, but it appears that this thing uses different file names every time, making every infection unique?! :)

I ran all the download and scan steps in your general instructions, but I still have the problem. Below are my logs from Ewido and HijackThis. Would you please look them over and tell me what to do next? THANKS! :tazz:

THANKS, John!

This SpySweeper program may have done the job!

I had two little burps:
1) When SpySweeper first started, it gave me an alert before I even had a chance to start a scan. I had it delete what it found (Sorry, :) I didn't take a screen shot, I was hoping it would capture it in the log) and kept going.
2) When the normal scan and subsequent Delete process finished and SpySweeper asked me to reboot, I hesitated. The "Cancel" button then went away by itself, leaving only the "OK" button. I clicked on the red "X" Close Window button on the Reboot dialog, and my whole system froze hard. I had to power off and back on again, but all seemed normal after that.

I did cancel a SpySweeper scan after the power off/on, and then started another one. I just wanted to double-check the Option settings after the forced power-off.

My new HijackThis log follows the SpySweeper log.

I am now cautiously optimistic: SpySweeper deleted Virtumonde and some suspicious cookies, and I have not seen the WinFixer messages since. But I'll let thing run for a couple days before I'll consider it totally fixed. :tazz:

THANKS AGAIN!!!!

Dale

PS: Oh yeah, in case it matters: I have four user accounts set up on this XP system. SpySweeper found suspicious cookies on three of them; the 4th does not get much usage, especially not Internet usage.

Hello again DaleU :tazz:

Looking good but we still have a couple things to do.

Go into add/remove programs and remove anything that says my way or my way search bar

After that fire up hijack this, press scan only and place checks next to these.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com...de_srchlft.html
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll (file missing)

Close all browsers and click fix on hijack this, then reboot and show me a new log. :)

Done.

1) Add/Remove prgroms would not remove "My Way Search Assitant"; I get a message "Specified Module Could Not Be Found".

2) HJT would not remove the R1 - HKCU entry. No error messages, it just would not go away.

And no WinFixer messages today!! :tazz: :)

THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP!

Dale

No biggie on the add/remove, what i wanted to see has happened already, except for one small annoying file. So with that this is what i need you do please.

Boot into Safe mode.

Fire up hijack this, press scan only and place a check next to this.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com...de_srchlft.html

Hi, John! :woot: Looks to me like running HJT in Safe Mode did the trick. :tazz: The latest log is below.

I did get an unexpected "Alerts" message out of SpySweeper (my new favorite anti-spyware program :) ) when I went into my kid's account to log it off. SS listed a bunch of new Favorites that it said were added to the browser without permission/knowledge. All but one looked pretty normal to me, and that one unexpected one is probably OK too. I think it was maybe the first time the account was online since I installed SpySweeper and got the malware cleaned up. Is that normal for SpySweeper to do that the first time? I don' remember seeing such a message on my own account.

Hey, I REALLY appreciate your :) on this!!! THANKS!!

Dale

Hi Dale :tazz:

That log is looking good, but I'm not sure about that spysweeper alert can you tell me what the alert was?

Hi, John!

SpySweeper is flagging a dozen or so cookies. I don't think I need to be concerned, but am not 100% sure. Below is a log that shows most of what is being found (there were a few alerts for which I did not get screenshots - sorry!).

I never worried about cookies too much; for most web sites it is really nice that they remember a little bit about you. But then I never had a program running nightly to look for them!

Can I ignore the low-risk cookie warnings? Maybe even turn off the search for them?

Thanks!

Dale

Hello again :)

Yep all is good there, you are clean congrats!!!! :tazz:

Since your issues have been addressed and you are ready to travel the net again, I will just give you a few ideas on how to stay safe out there. Best of all these programs are all readily available on the net for free :)

To reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster and SpyWareGuard.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

More info and download is available at:

Spyware Blaster Spyware Guard

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE--Adaware Tutorial

Spybot S&D--Spybot Tutorial

Antiviruses play an important role in keeping your computer safe and worry free while using the net. *NOTE* Only one antivirus must be allowed to run on your computer, as having two or more running can and will cause conflicts.

AVG Avast

Firewalls are also a must in any good prevention :

Zone Alarm Sygate Kerio

There are different browsers available on the net, other than Internet Explorer, we believe!! these are better for security purposes :

Firefox Opera

You must stay on top of your updates at all times, for the above mentioned applications.

It is vitally important to stay on top of your critical updates provided by microsoft.

This can be accessed by going to Windows Updates and following the prompts.

To add to the performance of your computer, i suggest a weekly maintenance program. Run this tool. Ccleaner

Lastly a second opinion on the Antivirus that you have chosen. I suggest running these online virus scans periodically, just to make sure that the av is doing a proper job, of keeping you safe :

Rav Online Scan Housecall Online Scan Panda Activescan

Housecall Java Online Scan<---For those who use Firefox, or opera.

And finally a little Posted Image How did I get infected in the first place ? (by Mr. Tony Klein)

Good luck and safe surfing :woot:

THANKS, JOHN! I really appreciate all your help! :tazz:

I will follow up on your preventive suggestions. I am on dialup internet now, but I just order broadband; it gets installed in about a week. Then I'll be able to get infected more quickly! :)

Thanks again,
Dale
