Hello forrest55...

Run Disk Cleanup, ScanDisk, and Disk Defragmenter (in that order) from System Tools. Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools

As a note, it's best to run the Disk Defragmenter from Safe Mode... :tazz:

Restart your machine and tap the F8 key repeatedly during the boot sequence...you will get an options screen, Safe Mode is option 3 on most machines. Use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and press "Enter". Windows will start with a minimum number of drivers and a low resolution display. Run Disk Defragmenter as described earlier and restart when it's done. It should restart in Normal Mode.

Try running the scandisk from Safe Mode as well. Sometimes a start up application will write to the HDD while scandisk is running which will cause it to restart. Safe Mode will usually keep this from happening.

Hi forrest55

Some of your problems sound suspiciously like malware...Please go to the Malware Forum and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the Start Here.

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself...then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum. Be patient, the Malware Forum is a very busy place and a two or three day wait is not unusual. DO NOT REPLY TO OR BUMP YOUR OWN LOG. If it shows a reply it may be overlooked as one that is being worked on.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.
