Hello...sorry to repost but my previous Topic Title was stupid (not disclosing my real problem).

All of this started while I was upgrading to Norton 2005.

OK...I followed all instructions (Ad-aware, CHShreader, Spybot, DSO exploit fix, I already have Norton's virus protection :tazz:

so I did not do AVG but I did do Trend Housecall, TDS-3 but could not download SP1a and I do already have SP2 from a previous update....so I just rebooted, downloaded Hijack this and here is the log....pleeeease help...it looks pretty scary.

Hi nicecara

You have a nasty About:Blank infection. This fix requires several tools that need to be downloaded. Please download these now, we will run them later.

1) About:Buster - Download it and extract it to C:/aboutbuster.
2) CleanUp! - Download it and install it.
3) CWShredder 2.11 - Download it and save it to your desktop.
4) Ad-Aware - Download, install, and update.

Enable hidden files and folders: http://www.bleepingc...torial=62#winme

During the fix do NOT connect to the internet. Unless you can memorize these instructions, it would be a good idea to print them out.

Boot into safe mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Run AboutBuster
-Click Start to begin the process
-Click OK on the Buster Report dialogue box to start the scan
AboutBuster scans the computer for malicious files and deletes them.
Save the report (copy and paste into Notepad and save as a .txt file) to post a copy for review.

Run CWShredder
-Next, click on the: ‘Fix’ button
-Follow the prompts, and press OK

Run CleanUp
-Make sure it is on Standard Mode
-Click the "CleanUp!" button

Run Ad-Aware
-Configure Ad-Aware for a full system scan
-Run it

Clean Up the left overs

Run HJT, close any open windows, and fix the following items (if they are still there):

Well I finally completed everything as directed and things seem back to normal (with the exception of below)...thanks so much...you guys are great!!!!! :thumbsup:

Booted into safe mode:

-Ran AboutBuster

-Ran CWShredder

-Ran CleanUp
Standard Mode

-Ran Ad-Aware
Full system scan

Cleaned up some left overs-ran HJT

-Most leftovers you advised me to remove appeared to be things I use....so I just fixed 2 about:blank files....but those 2 are pretty stubborn :mad: . Looks like they are still there.

Computer is working great again though . :tazz:

...but still stumped about why after all this, are those 2 measly about:files still there

All in all...things are back to normal and I had it really bad.

kc...I wasn't sure what you meant when you said "run the cleaner" in step four but I assumed you meant Cleanup...so I ran that and when it was finished I started to click yes to "logoff to remove the couple of files" prompt but my Spy Sweeper popped up and said that by continuing, "my computer was about to start a new program upon rebooting" and it advised me that what I was doing might be dangerous so I stopped. Please advise...did you mean "Cleanup" when you said "run the cleaner"? I thought I better check with you first to make sure. Thanks for any help. Also...after the cleaner...then I'm suppose to go back online to run the online virus scan right?

Hi nicecara

All cleanup does is put a start file on windows reboot to clean old tmp files I have regrun gold and that pops with this same msg my computer was about to start a new program upon rebooting allow this
after it has completed the start up file is removed

Please post a new hijackthis.log

OK..Kc, I started over ...went offline and ran HJT and "fixed" the files as you directed, ran Cleanup, went back online and ran the online virus scan (found one virus with the following wording)

TROJ DNSCHNGR.A Not Cleanable C\System volume information\...

it gave me the option of deleting or closing so being unsure, I closed, rebooted and ran HJT.

System Restore, a Windows XP feature, is similar to the "Last Known Good Configuration" in Windows NT and Windows 2000. You can use System Restore to restore the computer to a previous state, using the backups that it makes of selected system files and program files. Unlike the "Last Known Good Configuration" feature, System Restore maintains multiple restore points. This gives you the choice of restoring your computer to any number of previously saved states.

While this is a desirable feature, in some cases it should be temporarily turned off. For example, if the computer is infected with a virus, then it is possible that the virus could be backed up by System Restore. By default, Windows prevents System Restore from being modified by outside programs. As a result, there is the possibility that you could restore a virus-infected file, or that the on-line scanners would detect the virus in that location.

OK Kc...I have researched and read everything I could find about System Restore and I guess I understand it well enough but I'm a still a nervous wreck...it's so scary. Mainly I'm concerned about my "MS Money 2002" files....I understand that "My Documents" files, etc. will be fine but do you know about the Money 2002 files? I'm so sorry to be such a bother but my heart is racing because I have never done anything like this before and it would be horrid to mess up those files...for sure. Should I put the Money 2002 in My Documents folder or do you think things will be ok? :tazz:

Kc,

I have been trying to log on to your site from my infected laptop to print the message from you about system restore. I keep getting page can not be found. I figured your site was having problems so I just kept trying here and there. I decided to try you from my desktop here and had no problem...went straight to your site. Any clue what could be wrong with the computer we have been fixing? All other addresses seem to be fine.... just geekstogo.com. Any advice? I rebooted but still the same problem.
