Restore done, device manager shows the modem

Can I reinstall the video driver?

Now why would you want to do that? Did the restore remove the vid driver? If it did, then yes, go ahead and reinstall the driver.

How can I tell if it is done correctly?

Device manager will tell you what version driver is installed. Also, when Win98 installs it's generic driver, Display Properties>Advanced>Settings will not have that many tabs in the window. When you install a manufactures driver, you will probably see more tabs. Of course this depends on the manufacture/driver.

Why does the 3 com windows modem show up 3 times?

Many modems include fax and sound abilities... along with being a modem! This is why sometimes they show up in multitudes.

We have to identify the modem by part/model number. If Device manager or Control Panel doesn't give us the info, then you need to install Aida32. Once you launch Aida32, just expand the (+) sign of Computer, then scroll the right window and look for a modem name or any info you can find.

Doesn't restoring change the system back to the exact state it was? I thought any changes after that date would not appear, including any drivers installed. I reinstalled the driver because it appeared to be just the generic, I did notice after going back to Aida that Aida graphics appear much better. Before it looked as though a bomb had gone off on their screen. I now see the actual drivers listed.

In Aida, under "Modem" the drop down shows 3 "3com Windows modem TI" listed. Clicking on the first two didn't give any information but the third one lists the following: 3 Com Windows Modem TI
Driver Date 4/23/99
Driver Profile 3Com
INF File MDM3CISA.INF

Yes, restoring does change the system back, but I didn't know how far back the restore would take you.

The modem information is insuffiecient. Do you know if this was an upgrade someone did after the computer was built by dell? Would you perchance have the driver CD... actually, probably a floppy... lying around somewhere? The other option is to pull the modem out of the computer and see if you can find a model number stenciled somewhere, or a sticker with info on it.

Is it necessary to set this mysterious modem up if we use cable for our internet? I had to call in a pro today to deal with my dead tape drive and that is what he said. True, False? I got the impression that it may not work again. I find that you folks here seem to be much more knowledgeable than the few "pros" that I have dealt with. So, let me know.

If you're not going to use the modem, you can either pull it out, or disable it in Device manager.

Open Device manager
Expand the Modem tree (click on the "+" sign)
Double click on your modem
Select General tab
Select "disable in this hardware profile"
Click OK
