Hi, I hope someone can help me. I recently upgraded to Windows XP and since then, even though I have very few programs installed, my computer is running slower than before.

I am also getting a lot of Pop-Ups from "Messenger Service". I did have a program installed before to block all these pop-ups but I lost all after upgrading.

Do you have any anti-viral protection?

I don't see any problems. You need to upgrade to SP 2.

Have you tried running adaware? Cleaning out your temp. files?

you can also run msconfig.
start-run then type msconfig.
click on the startup tab and click on disable all
extend the command column to the right
anything related to your antivirus should be checked
hit apply then close
once you restart just check "dont display this message again"
that should make your system faster.

the easiest way to disable the messaging service is to go here

and download xp-antispy ... it's a small, free program that lets you close all those little holes in XP that Bill Gates and boys saw fit to leave open.

you can get rid of some other problem areas while you're at it, like upnp, stop all automatic updates, stop various other MS programs from reporting back to HQ

You didn't mention what you had disabled on the old installation, but keep in mind, if your computer is in the 600mhz to 1ghz cpu range (or even faster), XP WILL most likely run slower than 9x... there's a lot more going on... and actually, with all it's problems, the fastest Windows version ever was ME. Of course XP is more stable, but it is quite a bit slower on many systems. You can do tweaks, like stop the Restore feature (this helps a lot, of course the second you do it you'll probably have a system crash and then curse yourself for turning it off :-). Disabling almost everything with xp-antispy will speed you up some, too.

:tazz: Thanks for all the help guys. I followed most of the advice, but my computer is still running very slow, especially in start up and shut down.

(I didn't try the advice about msconfig is it definately ok to do this.... And what is SP2 / where do I get this.)

I can't understand the computer being so slow (and I mean really slow) as I have 80% free memory.

When I press Alt+Ctrl+Del - I have 30 running processes. Is this normal. Sorry for being such a nuisance but this computer is really doing my head in and I reckon my next step is to re-format (PLEASE NO).

Thanks for all and any help.

One more thing. How can I get rid of Set Up Icons on my Desk Top (they are mostly from the free programs I downloaded from here . . . Adaware, Spyware Blaster etc.,

Right-click on the icon and click delete to get rid of the icons.

If you want to know what processes are good and which ones are bad, go to www.answersthatwork.com

You can look at all the processes there. The ones that aren't there, you can google and see which ones are essential and which ones aren't. :tazz:

When I checked my running processes against www.answersthatwork.com It suggested that I had 5 maybe 6 viruses. I have AVG, TDS-3 Ad-Aware, SpyBlaster, CWShredder, XP-Anti-Spy + McAfee Firewall. all up and running and reporting no problems.

Please help me, I am a complete newbie to these viruses etc., and I don't know what to do next. :tazz:

Why do you think you have viruses? Is your virus scan showing up that you have them? Run a free one from Panda virus scan.
Your log looks clean.

When I checked my running processes against the processes in the site u suggested answersthatwork, 5 of the processes they identified as having a virus and maybe one other. My AVG virus check came up ok, but I'll check it against Panda virus scan.

How can i stop programs from starting up automatically when i start up my program. Maybe this would help me.

I apologize for not being more clean. I originally thought you wanted to look up what was in your log. That's why I gave you answersthatwork.com


the items in your hijack this log which start with an "04", such as this one:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DSLSTATEXE] C:\Program Files\BT Voyager 105 ADSL Modem\dslstat.exe icon

are what "start up" when your computer boots up.

What you can do is look up the last part of the line, for example:

dslstat.exe

in answers that work or you can google it. That way you can determine whether it's essential for start-up. You can also go to...start>>run>> and type in "msconfig" (without the quotes) and then click on the last tab. That shows you what starts up. Many of the processes are essential. You can uncheck them after investigating whether they are essential. You have some that are not essential to your start-up.

Is your machine slow starting up or just slow overall?

:tazz: Thanks for the quick reply. It is the slowest at start up (It takes about 5 minutes in total) and very slow in shutting down(especially shutting down AOL).
And it is slow if i have more than one application opened at any one time.

Sorry for being so stupid but when you say google it do you mean the google search engine?

Sounds like something else is going on. Have you cleaned out your temp. files? Defragged? I see that you need to update windows also.

Run Hijakc This again and post another log.
