GeekstoGo,

My sister downloaded some junk from AIM apparently by accident and I am still working to fix this from a month ago. There were trojans and the previous stuff I mentioned above. Now the problem is browser hijacking. Not popo-ups, but new windows of: ad.adserver.... or surverypanel......these are the main servers and I cannot disavle them. Also my registry has a lot of stuff and there are icons/programs that automatically install themselves on my desktop.

I ran all the test many times. The following is my hijackthis log. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite
AIMFix

Please double-click the AIMFix.exe file to start the process. Please wait while the programme scans your PC for AIM associated malware. When complete a list will appear, a log will be saved and Finished will appear. Please include that log in your reply.

Install Ewido Security Suite.

• Install Ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
  • Install background guard
  • Install scan via context menu
  • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.

• The programme will now open to the main screen.
• When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
• Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
  
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.

Now close Ewido security suite.

Please visit Kaspersky for an online file scan. Browse to the file mentioned and submit it for examination. Please wait for their reply and inform me in your reply. This is the file: C:\Program Files\twab\coae.exe

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

• Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
• In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
• Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

• Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
• Go to Options > Delete on Reboot > Process ALL in list
  
• Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look.

Please double-click the AIMFix.exe file to start the process. Please wait while the programme scans your PC for AIM associated malware. When complete a list will appear, a log will be saved and Finished will appear. Please include that log in your reply.

Install Ewido Security Suite.

• Install Ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
  • Install background guard
  • Install scan via context menu
  • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.

• The programme will now open to the main screen.
• When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
• Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
  
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.

Now close Ewido security suite.

Please visit Kaspersky for an online file scan. Browse to the file mentioned and submit it for examination. Please wait for their reply and inform me in your reply. This is the file: C:\Program Files\twab\coae.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

• Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
• In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
• Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Open HijackThis.
Click on Open Misc Tools Section
Make sure that both boxes beside "Generate StartupList Log" are checked:

• List all minor sections(Full)
• List Empty Sections(Complete)

Click Generate StartupList Log.
Click Yes at the prompt.
It will open a text file. Please copy the entire contents of that page and paste it here.

And a fresh HJT log from normal mode, main account.

Also please look at User Accounts in the Control Panel and leave the main account as having administrators'rights, and all others change to limited accounts.

Well, I have not scene the pop ads in quite a while, although I have been using firefox recently, but I will continue to check IE. I do have one issue though, my comp is really slow when I fo two specific things. When I have a find/open/explorer browser dialog box and click the drop-down menu, it takes forever to load before it drops, and we I open my computer, it searches for it for about 30 seconds before finding it. It did not used to do this. Also, if I try to click anywhere on the dropdown menu, it sometimes gives me the following a server busy prompt. But mostly, it takes a while to load, and freezes that program until it does.

That does sound slow but sometimes slowness can be blamed on things other than malware. If you look at your last HJT log, all of the 04 and 023 entries are running at startup and will slow you down. However, what you portray is slow even for that scenario so I will ask you to do another scan which will take me deeper into your PC, so that I will be able to see anything hiding.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

• Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
• Select Delete on Reboot
• then Click on the All Files button.
• Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

• Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  
• Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

I see nothing wrong in that log, however you mentioned getting rid of Altavista, so we can do that, and at the same time we can tidy up the 016 entries that I am not familiar with. This will not have a detrimental effect on your PC.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

Your PC's slowness does not appear to be malware related. It is likely to be due to the number of 04 and 023 entries that you have. All of those entries start at boot up and continue running at all times. You may wish to remove many of these after doing some research into each file.

All right, I have gone through with everything. The computer is not acting slow anymore but I found a file I can't get rid of. I went to processlibrary.com and looked up "netsvc.exe in this entry:
