Freezes while using Dial up

I recently moved outside of the real world (city limits) and no longer have DSL available to me. As frustrating as it is I have had to resort to using dial up again. My computer will connect to the internet just fine using the dial up connection. The problem starts when I log into explorer. No browsing allowed.....instant freeze. The same happens if I open outlook. This requires a total reboot. No cntrl alt delete...nothing. Any suggestions. If I log my laptop on using the dial up connection it works just fine.
