;) Several days ago I upgraded Media Player to ver 9.0.

Immediately afterward, for either "Shut Down" or "Restart", the screen that shows the Windows icon and Windows 98 logo with "Windows is Shutting Down" message at bottom, is scrambled beyond recognition.

when I try to start up or restart, I get an error message (on black screen) that says:

Windows Protection Error. Restart Computer

any attempts to restart or reset gives me the black screen with options to start up in Normal or Safe Mode, etc.

Starting in safe mode is OK.

Trying to start in Normal mode gives message saying I should restart in safe mode because Windows didn't fully load.

my system is a P3, 600MHz

OS is Windows 98 SE

AV is McAfee Pro 7.0; recently updated and system shows clean

I also run McAfee STINGER, recently updated and system shows clean

I also run Spy-Bot; recently updated and system shows clean and has been immunized.

Welcome back.

Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log as a new topic in the Hijack This forum. It will get a better response there from the people most qualified to analyze logs.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide. Also see this post.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall admanager controller.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

It looks clean. Let's try another tool, just to see. Sometimes when a log looks clean, this will get it.

Download the latest version of Ad-Aware from here (if you already have Ad-Aware installed, make sure that it is the latest version and always go online and update it before you run it).

Download Lavasoft's VX2 Cleaner plug-in here
http://www.lavasoftu...x2cleaner.shtml

How to use Lavasoft's VX2 Cleaner plug-in

- Close Ad-Aware 6 and Ad-Watch (if running)
- Download the free VX2 Cleaner at http://updates.ls-se...lvx2cleaner.exe
- Install the VX2 Cleaner
- Start Ad-Aware 6
- Go to "Plug-ins"
- Select the VX2 Cleaner plug-in and click "Run Plugin"
- If your computer isn't infected, click "Close".

If your computer is infected

- Select "Clean system"
- Reboot your computer
- Scan your computer with Ad-Aware
- Remove any VX2 objects detected
- Reboot your computer again
- Run a second scan to make sure the files have been removed from your computer

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :tazz:

I followed your instructions:

installed and ran VX2. showed clean. reran ad-aware. showed clean.

rebooted and ran HijackThis. The log is below.

my system seems to be running better that it has in a great while.

I still have a scrambled Windows screen on shutdown, but not on restart. Seems smoother. faster response.

as I discovered before, you guys work miracles.

I don't know what else to suggest.

Have you tried the free virus scan from panda or housecall?

There is also this program I run on an old 98. I like it, and I think it's fine. It's called ccleaner. You can download it from www.majorgeeks.com

It cleans up excess stuff you don't need; fragments, etc.
