The problem occured today when I turned on the computer. When I log onto my user account, it usually takes a second or two. But for some reason, it was taking a really long time during the 'loading personal settings' phase. So I turned the computer off, turned it back on, and logged in, and everything was normal so far. But then I find out that my desktop has been changed; the background is default. And my start menu is completely blank. When I try to drag an icon onto it, nothing happens.

So then I try to change my desktop back to what I had before. When I press OK or apply, nothing happens. When I try to change settings for other programs, nothing happens.

When I move the desktop shortcuts around and then restart, the shortcuts are back in alphabetical order. I've logged onto another user account and everything there is normal, so it's just my user account.

Can someone help me? I'm using Windows XP, version 5.1. Thanks in advance for your time and effort.

Hi dragon89...

Try this Microsoft Procedure to create a new User Account and recover your files from the corrupt account.

Hey, thanks for the reply.

When I try to copy the files over to a new account, it gives me an error saying "Access is denied". How do I fix that?

Would you mind posting a HijackThis log in this thread for us to look at? I want to make sure there isn't some Malware on your computer before you try other things. There ARE some viruses and things that can cause odd things like this to happen.

To post a HijackThis log:

Download

Save HijackThis in its own folder (i.e. C:\HJT). DO NOT run it from within a zip manager (Winzip), as no backups will be saved.

o start the scan, Click the Scan button on the left. The Scan Button has a new Caption. Save Log. Click the Save Log button to create a file named Hijackthis.log. A dialog box will pop up. Use it to select the location where you will save the log. Close the program.

Return to the Forum and reply to this post. Open the Log in Notepad. Highlight the entire contents. Copy and paste the contents of the HijackThis log into your post.

You definitely have malware on that machine, specifically the Alcan worm. Please start a new post in the malware forum, and paste your HijackThis log there. Someone will be able to help you get cleaned up as soon as possible.

Hi again. I wanted to clear up the malware problem before I come back to this one, but it seems that it might take a while. So with the Microsoft Procedure, when I try to move the files from one user account to another, I get an "Access Denied" error.

How do I make it so that files on one account is accessible to another account?

And I was wondering if I should get the malware fixed first before I attempt to tackle this problem?
