When I try to print from Photoshop CS to my Epson 1280 it will make one print. After that CS locks up and reports as "Not Responding". When I back out two files show as stalled: STM35 BackMon and EBAPI. STM35 BackMon appears to be associated with the 1280 status monitor. I've tried updating and reinstalling both CS and the 1280 drivers. Installed XP SP2. Ran Xoftspy, Spybot, Norton (getting different detects on all three?!)
Any ideas? Hijack log attached

Hi KEsch,

Firstly I am not very knowledgable on malware, spyware etc, but I don't think the syptoms of your problem are to do with this, more likely it is an application or a driver issue. This link to the Adobe support centre maybe of some help as I'm pretty sure it applies to your printer: http://www.adobe.com...ocs/322680.html

Hope this is of some use.

After jumping through a lot of flaming hoops the resolution of this Epson 1280 printing problem appears to be a lack of sufficient power to/from the USB card.

Epson Tech Support tried to resolve the problem by having me delete, reinstall and update their drivers. When that failed they offered to replace the printer. I said yes.

When I installed their replacement printer the problems were not quite the same but similar. After some more DR&U I was passed up to "Level 2" of Epson TS. The L2 tech had me turn off my HP 1012 LaserJet, which was also connected to the same USB card. This solved the Epson 1280 printer problem. The Epson tech suggested that the HP driver aggressively monitors the USB port and will corrupt the Epson files if they are on at the same time. To the point of sometimes hijacking the Epson printer port and printing a Smilie face instead of the intended file, he said. He suggested I only print to the Epson 1280 with the HP 1012 turned off and contact HP about this problem.

When I talked to HP a very curteous Indian gentleman consulted with his cohort for about ten minutes and they came to the conclusion that the issue was lack of power to/from the USB card. The HP explanation was that when both printers are plugged into the same USB card, and the Epson 1280 is tasked to print a file like a color photo that there is insufficient power available, even though the HP 1012 LaserJet is at idle. If the file is simple like a text page (like the native printer test pages) the problem won't show. However, when a graphic like a color photograph is atempted, the system blows up.

I'm not sure I buy the HP story entirely. The Epson workaround of turning off the inactive printer works for me though. I will also look into feeding the USB card some more power as there is a connector to do so.

Hi,

It might be better to power one of these printers externally if this is possible? This would circumvent the problem completely.

I run an Epson 890 only from my (Newish) computer. Regularly after printing I find the publication just printed appears to get 'stuck' in the spool manager, and it is impossible to delete. I close and restart computer and then the'Stuck' document prints for the second time. infuriating - but it can be stopped by going to Control panel/printers and faxes. Click on printer in use and stop the print run.

When I close down the computer to start this process - the following appears: EBAPI STM 35 Backmon ( in the closing programme box) This sounds to be the same problem. I too am looking for an answer!

What spyware/virus software are you running? Are your 890 drivers up to date? Did it always do this with XP? Is your XP updated to SP2? Is your printer fed via LPT1 or USB?

I put more power to my USB PCI card and it made no difference in not being able to print to my Epson 1280 with my HP1012 on, but at idle. I'm begining to think this is more likely an XP idiotsyncracy than a power problem.

In answer to previous posting - my Epson 890 has not had the driver updated. It has USB connection. I think it has behaved like this since I had it. Yes I have SP2 and am running beta version of Microsoft Antispyware ( but only since yesterday). It shows no problems to date. Also run Adobe Photoshop 6.

Could the problem be the printer driver?

I would try updating the driver if one is available.

I logged into the HP users forum trying to get an answer about the incompatability between my Epson and HP on USB. I was amazed to see it filled with people complaining about getting their HP printers to work as advertized, users complaining about their problems trying to impliment the HP drivers on HP printers, and a lot of bile about how their HP software interferes with other applications.

It really to bad there is no way to speak to the demons that write these drivers. Are there any HP/Epson sotfware engineers out there able (and willing) to help us with these problems?

I have my own business and have used HP printers. Just awhile ago I bought the Epson 1280 because of the wide format printing and the border to border printing. Most of the souvenir/gift type items that I sell have to be printed before made. Well, big mistake with this Epson. I am about ready to throw it out the window. I use Paint Shop Pro, which doesn't have as large of a file size as Photo Shop and this printer locks up. I have to power off/on, let the print job spit out so I can start again. I get the same nag screens as everyone else from the printer. The border to border is horrid. I do a full black background and the border edge is defined by a different color and a light line. I've had to throw out more paper than this is worth. Since I've bought tons of Epson paper and ink for my business I have to find another Epson that will do the job without locking up and that has some lasting power. I can't work at a steady pace. There's that 2 hour what the heck is wrong with it now problem throughout the day. If anyone has any thoughts on any other Epsons' please feel free to e-mail me. I'd like to hear what's working.
