I've run all the programs in the "Read this first" post and am still getting the ocassional unwanted pop-up.

I am concerned because one of the things I did was re-enable all the junk that I had turned off with msconfig.

I did screw one thing up...I clicked out of ewido before I saved the log it created.

Here's my HJT log:

No problem. I was out of town this week until last night anyway.

Yes, I am still having the problem of unwanted, various pop-ups even though I have my IE pop-up setting at the max.

Hello illinifan :tazz:

This will take a few steps to clear the malware but we will get it so lets get started :)

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
Save it to your desktop.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\ssv.dll

O16 - DPF: {15AD6789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windup.../bridge-c15.cab

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked

  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.

  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

After the reboot post a new hijack log and we can continue

Your log looks alot better. :tazz: Lets run the activescan and find everything thats hidine

Please run this online virus scan:
Panda Active Scan You need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Once you get to the Panda site, scroll down a bit and click on Scan your PC
  • A new window will appear; click on Check Now!
  • A new window will appear; fill in the boxes (Country, State, email addy)
  • Click on Scan Now! >
If you have never used ActiveScan before, you will be prompted to install an ActiveX control (asinst.cab) : click on Install. Panda will install the component, and then install the latest signature files.
  • From "Select a device to scan...", choose "My Computer"
  • Allow the scan to run. It'll take a while.
  • When complete, click on "See Report", and then on "Save report"; save it to a convenient location.
  • I will need you to post that report in your next reply; simply open the text file, then copy/paste the content here. Also post a new Hijack log

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.gee.../aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

You will be rebooting into safemode after the below instruction so when your machine starts rebooting start tapping f8

Pocket Killbox
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.

  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msfdje.gif
    C:\Documents and Settings\Brian Pollock\Local Settings\Temp\adlinstallwin32.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Brian Pollock\Local Settings\Temp\auf0.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Brian Pollock\Local Settings\Temp\iinstall.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Brian Pollock\Local Settings\Temp\!update.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\auto_update_uninstall.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CACHE\mswinstall.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Brian Pollock\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Ssk.log
    C:\WINDOWS\INF\Pynix.inf
    C:\WINDOWS\salmau.dat
    C:\WINDOWS\INF\Pynix.inf
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msehek.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Cache\setup.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\auto_update_uninstall.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1
    C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.2
    C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\installer_MARKETING48.exe
    C:\Program Files\horm
    C:\Documents and Settings\Brian Pollock\Local Settings\Temp\~7583836889.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Brian Pollock\Local Settings\Temp\i139.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Brian Pollock\Local Settings\Temp\auf0.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Brian Pollock\Local Settings\Temp\iinstall.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Brian Pollock\Local Settings\Temp\!update.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Brian Pollock\Local Settings\Temp\AutoUpdate0\auto_update_install.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Brian Pollock\Local Settings\Temp\AutoUpdate0\setup.inf

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder and a new hijack log

Thanks

So far, so good. :tazz: I have not gotten any unwanted pop-ups and it appears that the speed of loading webpages is back to normal.

However, I do still have 48 processes running in the background and that seems way too high. I know I've loaded some new things like Scotty and Ewido. I would like to turn off some of the other things I don't use any more like HotSync for my Palm Pilot and the email configuration protection that came with my high speed Internet access. I've used msconfig before to keep them from starting. Do you have a better suggestion?

And before I forget, thank you very much for your time and help. I really appreciate it. :)

Merry Christmas.

Sure msconfig works fine for that. I have 47 processes running :) You could also uninstall Ewido unless you plan to purchase it. That will speed things up a little.

Congratulations
your system is clean :tazz:

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.

  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.

  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.

  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.

  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
