I use a local internet provider and the mail system that comes with it. (Do not use Hotmail or Outlook) Occasionally, while I am offline, my computer will dial my internet connection and try to read mail from either hotmail or Outlook, depending on the mail settings in internet options/programs is set. What is telling the system to connect and why is it trying to read mail?

I use XP and MS Internet Explorer.

Thanks

Welcome jgilmore <_<

Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

I don't see anything suspicious in your log. So, I'm not sure what may be causing this? Outlook can be set to automatically dial-in and check your mail, but I don't think Hotmail can. <_<

I see you have McAfee. Are the definitions up-to-date? You might also try a free online scan here: http://housecall.ant...start_frame.asp
