When you have copied the files to disc, load the disc to check all the files are on it
Create a new folder called To Shred
Open the folders with the files you have copied to disc, click edit then select all, click move the selected items, move them to the new folder To Shred
Right click the folder, click tune up shredder, set it to overwrite 7 times, tick the space option, click OK

Hi Keith . Have downloaded my photos on to disc. I then ran the defrag again . This time there was 90% space instead of 88%. $hf-mig$ file appeared as unable to fragment . I found this file via search under $hf and deleted it. My virus scan still froze but at RECYCLER\S -1-5-21 -2871445989 etc. I defragged again and the file that would not defragment was this recycler file. I tried research on this and apparently it is due to downloading stuff on the internet. It is 2 fragments 996KB. What would you advise I do please? I tried to search for recyclers but nothing turned up.

Click start then my computer, right click local drive C, click properties to remove ticks from compress drive and allow indexing, click apply. You will see a bit more of recyclers, when it says access deined, click ignore all and wait for it to finish
Click start then control panel, click network and internet then internet options Click apply after each change.
On the general tab, click delete cookies, click delete files, include offline content, click clear history. If you have broadband / cable (fast) click settings and reduce the drive space used to 30MB, although you can reduce it to 1MB
Click the security tab and click default
Click privacy and click default
Click programmes and click reset web settings
Click advanced to tick, do not save encrypted pages to disc and also empty the temporary internet files folder when the browser is closed, click apply
Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, right click any file, click delete, confirm delete
Click start then all programmes, accessories, system tools, to run disc clean up, reboot
As a percentage of the drive 996KB is neglible, however, you have diligently gone this far and if you want to keep going until it is all clear, let me know

The apply button is lightened so unavailable to click on. Was there something I should have clicked on first ?

It will be light, and stay light unless you change anything
On the security tab, click custom level, it should be medium, click OK, then click default level and apply should light up, click apply

Have at last managed to do a virus scan. First time since September. Thanks alot , Keith.
When all this first started it was after a game down load from some site . The only thing that remains now is that it can take ages for me to get the computer up and working as the screen appears but all over to the right side. So I have to keep switching off until it appears correctly . It cant be dragged. It is like a partial screen . What do you think that is? There was obviously something in that download which messed up my computer as all this happened after that. When I defrag now there are 2 frags , file size 4 MB.$NTServicePackUninstall\syiwc. I was tempted to do a search and delete all files beginning $NT but thought better wait . Or should I just leave it be as free space is 91%.

Boot the PC and keep tapping F8 key until you get options, select safe mode, press enter, if the desktop loads properly then it is likely to be the video card drivers, you could also check for a reset button on the monitor. This can be either by pressing the menu button and then looking for reset or it may have a seperate button
See how that goes for the monitor, then run through this, some of which you have already done, but worth doing again now that things have improved to the point of being able to do complete virus scans.
Click start then run, type sfc /scannow then press enter, you will need the XP CD
System File Check will display an onscreen blue progress bar, when the bar goes, reboot.
Click start then run, type chkdsk /f /r then press enter, type Y to confirm for next boot, press enter then reboot.
Windows will appear to load normally then either the monitor will show progress or the screen will go blank, do not disturb this. This will take an hour or so before it gets to the desktop.
Click start, all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up, click more options then clean up restore points, click confirm, click OK. Then from system tools, run disc defragmenter.
Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, right click any file then click delete, confirm delete, then reboot
When it gets to the desktop, the system files and the hard drive will be as they should and you can check for any improvement
Run Tune Up Disc Clean Up
Run Tune Up Registry Clean Up
Click Optimize and Improve to run Reg Defrag, which will take a few minutes and need a reboot
After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot
After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot
After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor
The service pack files will need to stay, though you could uninstall the hotfixes in add / remove then re-install them from microsoft update, but see how the above goes first
