A friend of mine who came into a bunch of money had this computer he built but it needed a new hard drive and he didn't want to mess with it, so he asked me if I wanted it. Hey, it was free and mine was 10 years+ old so of course I said yes.

(It is a Pent IV 2.4) Well, I went and bought a new HD (Seagate 160 gig) Got home plugged everything into the motherboard (nothing was hooked up) When I'd boot up the computer it seems to recognize everything but it never would boot up all the way and I couldn't load windows it would lock up every time. Well after fighting with it for days and doing everything I could think of or read I finally took a look at the mother board itself, all but 2 capacitors were bubbled...sigh.

So off to the computer store. It was Saturday and of course nothing was open but I was able to get my hands on a Jetway PT88AS motherboard. While I was there I went ahead and picked up a modem I live in the middle of nowhere and only have access to dial up. I ended up getting an Amjet v.92 with an Intel 536EP chipset. Amjet and Jetway are basically the same company so I thought hey there shouldn't be any conflicts right? (Yeah right!)

Well got home and plugged everything in...but it would lock up when detecting IDE devices. Back to the drawing board...I unplugged everything except the graphics card, HD and CD rom. It booted up fine loaded windows like a dream. Powered down plugged in everything else it booted up and worked just fine. Actually I went thought the process a couple of times till I realized it was the modem causing the conflict then I just swapped the PCI slot the modem was in until it would boot up.

Well I thought everything was fine BUT...now if for any reason the computer locks up and I have to shut it down and then reboot (yeah I know that NEVER happens with windows)....well I have to pull the modem and put it in a different slot before it will boot back up. And I have to do this EVERYTIME I reboot! or it will not start! This is REALLY getting to be a pain in the butt...anyone have any ideas how to fix this? I've checked my drivers they are up to date. Also my modem has modem on hold by BVRP I'd love to be able to use this and I contacted earthlink my line does support the v.90 protocol but I can not get the modem to "go on hold" HELP!
Thanks,
Diana

Welcome to G2G Diana

So we can get a better idea of exactly whats going on with your hardware, I'm going to ask you compile a report. Don't worry, it's very simple really!
First, download Everest from this link :
http://majorgeeks.co...tion_d4181.html

Run Everest & click on the 'Report' menu, then select 'Report Wizard..'. Next select the 'hardware related pages' option & create the report as a text file.

Once created, save it to your hard drive, then attach a copy to your next post.

As a quick thought re. the need to move the modem to a different slot everytime the system crashes....
Once the computer has crashed & you've switched it off, have you tried waiting 5 minutes or so (without touching anything) before attempting to power it back on? You find with a few computers that once you've pulled the power on them (as opposed to shutting down normally), they won't power back up for a short time.

Thanks for the report Diana

Theres a couple more things I need to ask you :

1. You said earlier that sometimes the system won't boot unless you move the modem to a different slot. Do you mean the system won't boot at all (i.e no display at all or hangs at POST test) or is it just windows that fails to load up?

2. Can you go to Start->Run.. & type devmgmt.msc to open device manager. Then click on the View menu & select 'Resources by connection'. Look in the IRQ branch & let me know which IRQ is assigned to the modem. Also let me know if any other devices listed there are using the same IRQ.

3. Can you also tell me which 2 PCI slots you have been using for the modem. (Regard the PCI slot nearest the AGP slot No.1, next PCI slot No.2 & so on)

1.) No I guess it starts to boot up, but it hangs at detecting IDE devices...

2.) it looks like (isa) 4 communications port (com 1), no it doesn't look like there is another device using the same irq

3.) Each time I have to change the pci slot I go through all of them...starting at one and working my way down to 4...right now 4 is the one working

Thanks for helping me with this..

Sorry for the delay in replying.
IRQ4 - comm port1 will not be shared with any other device because it's a legacy device (i.e non-sharing).
A lot of pci software modems though use a virtual comm port (i.e 3, 4 or 5) which is then assigned an IRQ other than 3 or 4. If the modem is working in it's current setup though, then fine.

For future reference, try & stick with using pci slots 4 or 5, rather than the other 3. The reason being, they are the only two slots on your motherboard that don't share an irq with an on-board device (eg USB, sound etc)

From what you said about it hanging whilst detecting IDE drives indicates that the modem probably isn't the problem here.
In fact, part of the problem may well be the fact that you are using a Jetway motherboard. This is only a guess & may well prove to be wrong but Jetway don't rate very highly in my estimation I'm afraid.

I suggest the first thing to try is a couple of changes to the bios configuration. In particular, disabling the onboard RAID controller (as it isn't being used) & disabling one of the USB controllers.

If you need help in doing this, please tell me
