This is a little more advanced, but it's not that hard to do. Just follow along...

Click Start -> run -> type regedit

Now you're into Registry Editor...

To backup registry: click file -> export -> type a filename & save file

Now you have to add that registry key...

Hit the plus sign next HKEY_Local_Machine, then Software, then Microsoft, then Windows, then CurrentVersion, then Explorer

Right click on the Explorer folder and select New -> Key -> and type SCAPI for the new key name

This will add a SCAPI key (folder) under the Explorer folder.

Next, Right click the SCAPI folder and select New -> DWORD Value -> and type Flags for the value name (it will appear on the right side of the window)

Now just right click the Flags name on the right side of the screen and select Modify

Type 100c02 under the Value Data, leave it as Hexidecimal -> click OK

That's it! You should now have a SCAPI folder under the Explorer folder on the left and inside the SCAPI folder (on the right side) you will see the default REG_SZ and the REG_DWORD you just added.

Close registry editor and see if your problem is still happening. No need to reboot.

Post on here if it works or not.

I tried to download that patch from MS. After trying to download it by using IE, my system just hangs up. It tells me it's checking my system for updates and I just sit and sit. I cancel it. I thought maybe my IE was corrupt, so I tried to download a new version, but the MS site just hangs on me. Now I can't even find out if I have current updates or not. I even tried to down load click art and when I press to download, it just sits there like I've never told it to download. I tried to repair office 2003, and it said it was "fixed." I tried the site again and same thing happened. That's why I haven't written. This is taking so much time. Any other ideas?

I found the answer to the problem in the first sentence of the MS article listed by bmcpartland. Disconnect any mapped drives that aren't accessible. This is what is causing the hang.

I experienced the same problem: "save" and "save as" both didn't work (word 2003). Tried everything (even a new MSOffice 2003 Pro installation) and finally, after a long analytic search, the problem seemed to be the interference of the installation of adobe acrobat 6.0. After de-installation the problem was gone.

Ref: monkranter's reply on May 28, 2005

I just starting getting this problem and found that there were some "memory card on hp.... " with drive letters S thru Z that were not accessible any more. I did a right mouse click on each drive and Disconnect as monkranter suggested. The drives went away and my Save As problem went away also.

This was probably caused by replacing one HP All-in-One with a newer HP All-in-One. Apparently the uninstall of the old one did not remove the memory cards and was causing the problem.

Thanks for your help. :whistling: It would have taken me a longgggg time to have figured this out.

Hey thanks for the suggestion to check for mapped network drives that are NOT on line.

I deleted the mapped inactive drive and VOLA, instant save back with Word
Word 2003 on XP Pro

Again, many thanks for doing the suggestions :) :)
