My notebook (HP omnibook xt1000, XP Home) became very unstable and would keep restarting. I tought it was a system problem until i took out the battery. It runs since ok. The battery is 2 years old; should i change it or could it be a problem of contacts ?

The notebook motherboard is always a weak point. Based on your description, the bad battery makes the motherboard short circuit or something. So, you probably need to check the motherboard or change the battery. The battery's problem is more related with dying cells rathen than contacts. Also, I do think 2 years old battery should come to its end.
