Hi jonh and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

I need to get you to move HijackThis to a folder of its own so that nothing gets deleted by mistake

1. Right click in an empty space on your desktop.

2. From the Menu, click New, then Folder and a folder will appear on your desktop.

3. Name the folder HJT

4. Copy/Paste your copy of HijackThis from its current locationinto the new Folder that was just created.

5. Now, run the program and post a fresh HJT log for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

1. I want you to UNINSTALL the following program through the ADD/REMOVE feature of your Control Panel:

Spyware Cleaner

SEE: http://www.spywarewa...re.htm#products

2. Now, using Windows Explorer, I need you to DELETE the following folder and all its content:

C:\Program Files\SpywareCleanner

3. I want you to download and run a free trial version of an anti-trojan program called: Trojan Hunter . Let it scan your whole system and remove anything it finds.

4. REBOOT your system.

5. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

Your log shows elements of the Vundo trojan infection, but only some elements. We will attempt to remove these by the following procedures but, and this would not be a bad thing, they may bring out all the elements. If that were the case, it is usually not complicated to handle.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {d48423da-9cc4-4204-a823-a25aba3c337d} - G:\WINDOWS\system32\efwftogp.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5RS_0001_0808] "G:\Documents and Settings\The Hagues\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\FU0ZTIEY\WFXScanR[1].exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spyware Cleaner] "G:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner\SpywareCleaner.Exe" /boot
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddabb - G:\WINDOWS\system32\ddabb.dll

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

    G:\WINDOWS\system32\efwftogp.dll
    G:\Documents and Settings\The Hagues\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\FU0ZTIEY\WFXScanR[1].exe
    G:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner<==Folder
    G:\WINDOWS\system32\ddabb.dll

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.
Regards,

Trevuren

A. 1. Backup the registry by going to Start>Run> and type ‘regedit’ without the quotes. Once the Registry Editor opens, please do the following:
  • Highlight My Computer
  • From the file menu choose ‘export’ in XP.
  • Choose Desktop as the destination
  • Under Export Range, choose "ALL"
  • Use Sysreg as the file name
  • Click Save and EXIT the Registry Editor once the operation is completed
  • To verify that the export was successful, you should see a "blue cube icon" on your desktop named Sysreg.reg
If a restore of the registry is required in case of emergency, just click on the exported regfile on your desktop, and answer YES to the question whether you want to merge this file with the registry. Wait until you get a message saying something like Merge Successfull.

2. Launch Notepad, and copy/paste everything in the codebox below into the new document, including the word REGEDIT4. Go up to "File Save As" and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files" and save it to your desktop as fixme.reg.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"NI.UWFX5RS_0001_0808"=-

3. Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

4. Reboot your computer.

===================================

B.
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System

C. Please follow the instructions provided, you may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.
  • Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
    • Install ewido security suite
    • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
    • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
    • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
    • The program will now go to the main screen
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
    • Click on Start
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the updates are installed do the following:
    • REBOOT into Safe Mode
    • Run EWIDO
    • Click on scanner
    • Click on Start Scan
    • Let the program scan the machine
    • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
    • Click Save report
    • Save the report to your desktop
  • Reboot your machine and post back a new HJT log and the ewido .txt log file you saved by using Add Reply

Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures.

Dear Treveuren
It seems to be clean and behaving.
One question .. my son is using Azures and Bit Torrent , is this likely to attract malware. He'd switched off the windows firewall also,

All P2P attracks junk. Please raed the article by TonyKlein and get yourself a firewall (Zone Alarm is free and it blocks both incoming and outgoing.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:
  • Click Start. Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Right click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
  • Left click on "System Restore Tab"
  • Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Left click on "Apply"
REBOOT your system

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Right click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
  • Left click on "System Restore Tab".
  • Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Click on "Apply"
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren
