Hi. I'm trying to clean up my system by following the advice given in this forum for beginners. I've two hard drives on my system (Cdrive 20gb and D drive 60gb) and have windows xp on both. When I had trouble connecting to the internet on my C drive I was able to access your advice on my D drive.

I've successfully downloaded and run WinsockXPfix, Ad-aware and CW Shredder. I've also downloaded Spybot. Unfortunately Spybot scans ok, finds 20 items to fix but stops responding when I try to fix them. Note this is on C drive only...plus CPU usage jumps to 100%.
I've also tried running Spybot on the D drive. Here it found 6 itens to fix and fixed them with no problems.

Can anyone offer me advice on how to get spybot to work on my C drive.

Thanks in anticipation

Hi ch76utb

Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Hi again, many thanks for your advice. I've taken (tried to take) the steps you suggested. Having problems running Housecall...keep getting a message saying server busy/too much traffic. Also had a problem with the on line scan from Panda. Tried both scans several times over the past few days with same problems??

Anyway did the rest as you suggested..except couldn't find the folders
C:\Prog|Seach|search.dll
C\Prog files|Windows Adstatus
Winmon32.exe

Ran Hijack this and got the report below. Any further help would be most appreciated. Thanks CH76utb

Hi ch76utb

The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.
