Hi, I've read through the FAQ and a lot of posts here so I made sure I could come up with a coherent post. I have Adaware and Spybot and run them often. Just recently I got the "Dr Watsons Postmortem Debugger" error a lot of people here received, but in the process in attempting to fix it a whole lot of spyware got put onto my computer through IE. I use Firefox, but when one of my virus scanning programs updated it opened IE and the floodgates were open.

So my desktop was taken over by a black screen with a long "WARNING: your computer is infected! etc, etc" message. I found where this was in my folders and just deleted it. This changed my desktop to a flashing white/tan screen. But whenever I shut down/restart my computer I see my regular desktop flash briefly.

Every so often while browsing on Firefox a separate window will open, which in turn opens an IE popup, and then all of the viruses I uninstalled are put back in.

You have a nasty About:Blank infection. This fix requires several tools that need to be downloaded. Please download these now, we will run them later.

1) About:Buster - Download it and extract it to C:/aboutbuster.
2) CleanUp! - Download it and install it.
3) CWShredder 2.11 - Download it and save it to your desktop.
4) Ad-Aware - Download, install, and update.

During the fix do NOT connect to the internet. Unless you can memorize these instructions, it would be a good idea to print them out.

Boot into safe mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Run AboutBuster
-Click Start to begin the process
-Click OK on the Buster Report dialogue box to start the scan
AboutBuster scans the computer for malicious files and deletes them.
Save the report (copy and paste into Notepad and save as a .txt file) to post a copy for review.

Run CWShredder
-Next, click on the: ‘Fix’ button
-Follow the prompts, and press OK

Run CleanUp
-Make sure it is on Standard Mode
-Click the "CleanUp!" button

Run Ad-Aware
-Configure Ad-Aware for a full system scan
-Run it

Thanks for the response. I have been working on this for about 3 hours now, but with mixed results. It was true that every time I closed IE, the default home page would change to about:blank. That is no longer the case. However, the random installation of the viruses still exists. I deleted the files you said both through HJT and manually, however I have not been able to locate the "C:\WINDOWS\ isrvs\desktop.exe" folder both through using the search function and manually searching C:\WINDOWS. As a result of this my desktop is still a very ugly white/tan flashing screen.

Also, whenever I try to run the final 2 scans you listed, I get errors. The pandasoftware one seems to randomly close itself at some point in the scan, and in the beginning of the trendmicro scan I always get an error saying "Housecall error: Troj ____." So I have been unable to get those to work. Viewing the HJT scan from this computer session, all of the files I had previously deleted are back, and the "trusted zone" websites have increased drastically.

Another update: The about:blank problem is still solved. I ran a trojan search posted by one of the mods in another thread, and it found 3 problems in my documents and settings/owner/desktop/backup folder. There were about 5 other similar files in here, so I deleted them all.

Upon restarting, the screen was my normal desktop for about 30 seconds. However, there were no desktop icons. It was just my picture, and a taskbar at the bottom. Then it quickly became the same it was before: with icons, but with the white/tan flashing screen.

Every time I run ad-aware upon restarting I get the same thing, 10 registry keys and 10 registry values of "possible browser hijack attempts." Spybot never finds anything. I noticed a few programs that would open upon startup and deleted them (one was titled 3p1.exe I believe).

The desktop.exe is what I believe to be a legitimate program, because it was put on this computer over a year ago. When I switch users, the desktop is perfectly fine, which leads me to believe that there is some specific file in my settings that is causing all this. I have yet to find it though.

Does anyone have any ideas? I would post another HJT log but the one I have right now looks exactly the same as the one I posted above.

If you know these, don't remove them, but a lot of these are BAD!

Also, I would shut down a lot of the programs you have in the Startup list and reboot. Anything to do with Real makes me cringe. I have removed everything to do with Real Player (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe; O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot). At least I think this is the one.

There's probably more, but it looks like you still have a lot to do yet.

I have hidden files to be visible, yet the folder C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ just can not be found no matter where I look. It's simply not in that spot.

I've gone into safe mode about 10 times now, and every time have exitted with adaware and spybot all saying there are absolutely 0 viruses on the computer.

Then I restart, plug in my internet wire and everything is fine for about 10 minutes. I ran a HJT log at this time and everything appeared fine. There is one "trusted zone" that I keep deleting, but it comes back every HJT scan I run. I have never declared anything to be a trusted zone so this has not been done by me.

A few minutes later another firefox window will open, followed by IE. It immediately installs 5 "anti-virus" programs on my desktop as well as something called dddd.exe with some girl's picture as the icon. The program 3p1.exe opens at this time as well, and then closes. I keep deleting this but it comes back every reboot.

Is the one trusted zone that is always there causing this? Like I said before, Adaware and Spybot find nothing when I reboot. But as soon as the popups come, Adaware finds over 80 new infections every time. These include things like Elitum, and Ebates Moe Money Maker. I keep removing these, too. Elitum installs 2 folders in the WINDOWS folder called "EliteSideBar" and something else similar to it.

I repeatedly run HJT and select "fix checked" over everything you say, and it appears to disappear. But it keeps returning. I really have no idea what to do from here.

I would also just like to add that the crowbar.exe in the 2nd is a safe program that I have used for a long time. It's just a taskbar on the bottom of the screen, in case you were wondering.

Does that provide any useful info? I keep noticing that the virus is re-installing two things in my windows folder called brew.dll and wnim.dll, I can't remove either though because it says they are in use. I keep going around manually deleting all of the programs that keep popping up, but there is something deeper that just lets them come right back.

Once again last night I went to sleep with the computer on after ad-aware and spybot both came up with nothing. HJT said everything was normal with the exception of the one trusted zone that is not correct, but yet again when I wake up my computer is flooded with popups. I really have run out of ideas.

Interesting, thanks. I downloaded the program you suggested there, but it doesn't appear to help me right now. I installed that and rebooted into safe mode again, and re-ran the 4 steps I was told to do in the beginning of the thread. Again, everything was clean before rebooting, I even deleted the brew.dll and wnim.dll files. I restart, re-connect to the internet and browse for a while with firefox with no problem, when 3 "iexplore.exe" programs open and the viruses re-install. I really have no idea what to do, I'd gladly get rid of Internet Explorer forever if I could.

I also have no problems on ad-aware when starting the computer, but after the viruses start it gives me a lot of CoolWebSearch reg keys and values now. But CWShredder has never found any of that on my computer. Really confusing.

I had one like that and it took me awhile to find the program that kept reinstalling files. As to CoolWebSearch, if you're having problems with it, check out :

Never used this program, but it has a lot of information on what files to look for and delete.

Have you gone to Start>Run, typed in msconfig, and selected your Startup tab and shut down all the processes except the ones you need? Did you also do all the virus scans that this forum recommends? Hopefully, the one who was reading your logs will get back to you soon.
