Cant use Headphones through front panel connection

Everytime i connect my mircrophone/headset in the front panel if my pc which is most convienent i cannot get it to work i dont hear anything, and i am telling my audio software that there is a microphone/headset in the appropiate connections in the front panel and still does not work, im running xp pro can anyone assist?

Well, since we have no idea what kind of machine you have, it begs the question... are your front jacks even hooked up inside the computer? Have you ever been able to listen to headphones using the front jack?

Have you tried installing the drivers for your sound card.

does the microphone work if you plug it into the back ports on the machine?

i will get back to you with my computers specs, but yes the mircophone and headphones do work when i plug them into the rear jacks, they just dont work at the front jacks

It's possible the front jacks aren't even hooked up to the motherboard/sound card. Open the case up and see if the wires from the front jacks are connected to anything.
