Download the Hoster.

• Unzip Hoster to a convenient folder such as C:\Hoster.
• Run Hoster.exe from its new home
• Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner (If available).
• Click Restore Original Hosts and then click OK.
• Click the X to exit the program.

Then please do this for me:

Go to Start > Run and paste the following into the box:

Click OK.

Well I can definitely see why your firewall isn't working.

Please download firewall.zip from here:  firewall.zip   1.44KB   555 downloads

Unzip it to your desktop. Go into the firewall folder and double-click firewall.reg. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES.

Reboot your computer.

After reboot go to Start > Run and type firewall.cpl make sure it's on now and that nothing is greyed out - let me know.

Also, after reboot, open this in notepad again and paste what it says here:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS

The program Hoster that you ran restored the original HOST - that is what it should look like. The way it was previously was set by a virus to prevent you from going to various anti-virus websites as well as Microsoft. It looks good now.

Hello Jaw - you can uninstall or delete anything I've had you download. However, I recommend all of the applications listed below.

Let's clear restore points to give your system a fresh start on System Restore:

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UNCheck Turn off System Restore
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Then rehide files:

Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

• AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! If Norton is old or about to expire some excellent free anti-virus programs available are Avast, AVG and Anti-Vir
