I am having a common problem with AIM that others are having as well. I ran hijackthis on my computer because that's what i was told to do and i have these results. So I need to know which ones to get rid of to help my AIM work again. Please let me know! THanks so much

Well everytime i go to instant message someone or someone instant messages, an error message always pops up that says " AOL Instant Messenger has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. " And then it just shuts down. I even tried uninstalling it and then installing it again and it still does it. I ran all of my spyware and anti-virus software and still nothing. Any help would be so appreciated this is frusterating. Thanks so much!

First, get rid of all AIM stuff on your computer. Go to remove programs-remove AIM and any related AIM toolbars. Then go do a search on your computer under the start menu for AIM under files AND words or phases. You may get over a hundred returns. Delete them all one by one. Then go to internet options on your web browsers and delete all cookies and temp internet files. Search again for AIM files. If you got the stupid Weatherbug thing with AIM (which I think I saw in your log), go to your start menu, all programs, right click on it, properties and find its location. Then delete it. Make sure you have all instances of AIM removed. Check your registry files after you've backed up the registry for AIM stuff.

Then empty your recycling bin. Restart your computer. Go and get latest version, I think it's 5.9.3690, and reinstall. If you have any restore points on your pc which may be infected and system runs the way you want, remove old ones and make a new restore point. Make sure your firewall settings are set correctly for whatever programs you use. ZomeAlarm seems to be the easiest to work with and it's free.

I use Trillian which lets me connect to AIM, Yahoo, ICQ and IRC all at the same time. Includes MSN, too. It's free. Also. use AIM and Yahoo at times with no problems, although I've had other programs load and give me a similar message as you've been getting.
