i bought a new laptop when i went away to college in august, and before i moved i used my dad's wireless network to access the internet while i was at home. when i moved to school, i got a free high speed connection in my dorm room. however, since i plugged in to my school's network, i cant seem to get a wireless connection anywhere. when i try to connect, my computer tells me im connected and my signal strength is excellent, but when i try to view any website, it says page cannot be displayed. ive tried connecting through the windows software, and after getting no results with that, i tried my intel wireless software, but still got nothing. ive tried changing all of my firewall settings but nothing seems to work. help!

Your dorm room connection probably isn't wireless and is instead probably wired through the network port. Plug that in instead.

You probably tried these, but did you try to disconnect from the wireless set up at home and hit repair.

Then, click refresh wireless network list?

Did you hit repair and let it go through the process? Does it recognize your parent's wireless account when you hit refresh network list?

not to but in. But when i was a freshman i had this exact problem. School's usually give a static ip for all students. If they did then you need to go in and set back to auto. Just an idea. SOrry for intruding.

i think that the IP address WAS the problem, because today i was on the phone with a dell rep, and he said that my IP address wasnt right for the router i was using. he told me to reset the router. it reset, but now it says that we need a password to log on. the problem is that it never gave us a chance to set up the network, so nobody knows it. now this is the only computer with internet access in our house!

a few ways to find out the default password. First what is the name of the router ( NEtgear, linksys, etc). Check out the web. Most routers defaut password is well "password". Sometimes it even says on bottom of router like my netgear does.

thank you! i tried both of those but they didnt work, so i just pushed the reset button on the front (the one that messed it up in the first place) and it reset itself without a password. now our network is up but my computer still wont connect. i still think it's the IP address. anyone know how to reset it?

go to start on your taskbar>select run. type "cmd" and press enter. a window will pop up. In the window, type "ipconfig/release" and press enter
next type in "ipconfig/renew" press enter. that should reset your ip address.

something to note:
I could not connect to my residential wireless network although it was showing itself on the list of "wireless networks available". All I did was unplug the power cord from the linksys router for about 10 seconds and turn it back on. everything has worked fine since.

When I trouble shoot with my ISP on the phone, they tell me to turn it off for 10 minutes and try again. May be a different problem we are solving, but thought I would throw it out there.

i had a similar problem, my wireless thing says its "connected" and the connection says "excellent"
but it wont let me access the internet
so i tried your advice with the "start" menu and "run"
and then u type in "ipconfig/release" and then "ipconfig/renew"
it worked fine until that.
Then this came up:
"the operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation"
all this computer stuff is confusing :)
please help!! :)
