Thank you for taking the time to read my post. I'm a rather computer-illiterate writer that's gotten herself in a bit of a bind. My computer, a Dell with Windows XP, got a bad virus problem a while ago. I let my virus protection lapse *shame* and got bombarded with 300 viruses over the course of a few months. I took it to a specialist, who had to wipe out the computer completely. He didn't say that there was any damage to the computer. After he wiped it out, though, my dvd-rom won't play anything. Not CDs, not DVDs, nothing. I put a CD (and I've tried about every one in my collection) in the slot, and wait, and nothing happens. No little window or error message or anything. I open 'my computer' and double-click the dvd-rom button thing (yeah, I'm very technical) and it says that there's nothing in it. I really really need my dvd-rom back, but I don't know how to fix it. I've contacted Dell support, but their responses were so complicated and difficult that I either couldn't follow them or it still didn't fix the problem. I called the computer specialist, and he said he didn't know what the problem was, but I should bring it in. I'm confused. Does this sound like something I can fix myself? Should I bring it back to the specialist? Did the virus-wiping do something to it? Thank you so much for reading my (long) post and for any help or advice you may be able to give me.

Hey, I'm pretty computer illiterate myself but it sounds like you will have to take it back. Does Dell not offer in- home service, and replacement of defective drives?
I have always bought my computers from Circuit City. They offer great in-home service. When you're computer illiterate that in home service is really worth it and is a life-saver. The only thing is they don't help with software problems unless you pay them $30- 40 per call.
But hardware problems are included and if they can't fix it over the phone they send out a tech to fix it in person.
Best Buy also offers the in-home service agreements too. Sears may as well and Sears offers warranties and service on products not even purchased at Sears.

Good Luck!
