Hey, I'm pretty computer illiterate myself but it sounds like you will have to take it back. Does Dell not offer in- home service, and replacement of defective drives?
I have always bought my computers from Circuit City. They offer great in-home service. When you're computer illiterate that in home service is really worth it and is a life-saver. The only thing is they don't help with software problems unless you pay them $30- 40 per call.
But hardware problems are included and if they can't fix it over the phone they send out a tech to fix it in person.
Best Buy also offers the in-home service agreements too. Sears may as well and Sears offers warranties and service on products not even purchased at Sears.
Good Luck!
