I'd been getting popups (vx36.com among, many many others) and each time the computer was turned on, I got an error message about webspecials not being found. They were increasing in number (a few popups or error messages each time). So I came here.

I've followed the "start here" page's directions (I've run the latest and updated versions of everything). Every program, aside from CWShredder found things (WebSpecials seemed to be a problem in each scan, along with things like Instafink), and all were removed. I rebooted after each, and I thought there was no further problem.

However, I used AdAware again (it's setup to run after each reboot), and I noticed that they were all there again. They don't seem to want to go quietly. So, I looked through my log, and I generally know how to read them, but I didn't see anything that I didn't recognize. So, now I'm here to post it to see if anyone can help me figure out why the malware/spyware/virus won't go away.

So here is the logfile:

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).

Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files/folders (if found):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\palega.dll

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. ;)

Right. Thanks for the quick reply.

So, I checked and fixed the things you mentioned. I rebooted in safe mode, but the file you said to delete was gone. So I rebooted normally, only to find the webspec.dll error again. And, once again, AdAware is set up to run automatically. It found WebSpecials and P2P Networking, though I don't have any file sharing programs. So, I went ahead and ran the following log, but it doesn't mention either problem. Here's the log in any case:

Nothing in your log, let's give it a try. webspec.dll is WebSpecials, make sure you don't have any items checked in msconfig, when rebooting.
