OK. Lots of questions. Here are a few answers:

how can I tell what virus scan out there is a good one. There must be millions? any hints?

You'll have lots of different answers to this, but the guys I trust the most say NOD is the best. I use AVG.

I see that I have quite a few viruses.

yes and no.

Anthing that starts off with this:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery<<<means spybot found it and put it in its recovery folder but it is not affecting your system.

C:\backupfile\Outlook.pst/<<It is in your backup file and is not affecting your system. BTW: have you ever had Kazaa and when did you have it and uninstall it? This is a major trouble-maker.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine <<means that Norton found it and quarantined it. It is not affecting your system.

Did you delete everything Kaspersky found? Please do. Delete everything that it found.

Thanks
I thought it was just an online scan and it didn't really do anything to my pc. Should I have downloaded a trial version, would that have removed the potential problem files?
I saw what you meant about the files being in back up and quarantines. Those have already been isolated so to speak, right ?

I have the free version of AVG what is the difference with one I buy?

So I should run that scan again and delete those files or download the trial version and do it?

Yes. :tazz:

Have you ever run adaware?

Run Ad-Aware with the latest update.
  • Download the latest version of Ad-Aware (Ad-Aware SE Build 1.06r1) from here.
  • If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version.
  • After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run.
  • Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
  • Once the definitions have been updated:
  • Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
    • Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
    • Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)
      • "Automatically save logfile"
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
      • Prompt to update outdated confirmation) - Change to 7 days.
    • Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
    • Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives"
    • Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
    • Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
    • Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).
    • Under "Shell Integration", select "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin".
    • Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
    • Click on the "Defaults" button on the left.
    • Type in the full url of what you want as your default homepage and searchpage e.g. http://www.google.com.
    • Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
    • Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol and select the following:
      • "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
      • "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
      • "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
    • Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
      • "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
      • "During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary"
      • "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
      • "Delete quarrantined objects after restoring"
    • Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
    • Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
    • Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
    • Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
  • Close all programs except ad-aware.
  • Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
  • Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
  • After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.

Just so I have this right, I am doing the scan again which will take some time. At the end it will give me a list of files that are viruses and or problem files. Am I able to delete them from this scan? or do I need to download a trial version and run the scan again and delete the bad files that way?

I have adaware 1.o6r1 personal I did an update of the dat file is that what you wanted or is there some other version I should have?

Wow did that take a long time. I downloaded the Kaspersky antivirus program and it found 5 or 6 objects after doing a ful scan and deleted them. I customized Adaware and ran it . It found some 16 MRu objects and 25 tracking cookies , all of which were deleted.

As to your question about Kazaa, yes I had it on my pc about 2-3 months ago(maybe longer) I have heard it has a bad reputation.

Thanks again I hope this helps!

Have you tried running the scanner again?

Have you removed all traces of Kazaa from your system?

Is your computer running OK?

I guess the only two things left to do is give me a new hijack this log and a new winpfind log. Then, I can release you to the tech guys again.

Download WindPFind

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to start scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while.
When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

Just to give you a brief update. No I haven't tried the scanner yet and I will try to remove anything with Kazza in it. Any suggestions how?
The computer has some problems still. IE opens slowly and it didn't do this before the last changes I made. Also this has been puzzeling me for awhile ( maybe around the same time this all started) When I click on My computer on my desktop it takes anywhere from 15 to 30 seconds to open up and show me the contents. Any thoughts on this?

Go to add/remove programs > remove kazaa.

Run Adaware using previous instructions. Delete any entries found.

I tried to uninstall kazaa and got this message "error loadingC:|windows\system32\cd_clint.dll, the specific module could not be found. I thought that I had removed it several month ago but I did a search on it and found several thing including the application. Should I just run a search on " kazaa" and then delete what I find?

Do you have ares lite also? Thats another P2P file sharing service. Please go to add/remove programs and remove it.

I may have asked you these questions before: Is norton firewall and AVG your viral?

Is it a Xerox scanner? I'm thinking not.

I also saw you have an MP3towave program. It is shareware. Could not find anything that said it was bad, but could not find anything where it said it was good.

If you do not play games that require wild tangent. Please go to add/remove programs and remove it. Read here for more info.

http://www.answersth.../tasklist_g.htm

I saw you have spybot teatimer enabled as well.

Please disable teatimer, spyware doctor, and any of the other programs I suggested you disable and do the appropos fix again in safe mode.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.gee.../aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

After this, if this turns up blank, I am sending you back to the tech's because I have exhausted all means.

You have been a great help!
My scanner is an Epson Perfection 1670.
I have a couple of shareware mp3 to wave programs, not sure which one you mean.
Teatimes was disabled meaning it was unchecked in my msconfig, also Areslite was uncheked. I deleted what I found in my search for it. It was not in my ad/remove list.
Heres the last hijack log. I will run Aproposfix next and post the results.
