Hey,

I am getting popups and the first one that originates when I go onto Internet explorer is that Win32res.exe is sending information or something. I recently went through a debugging process with Ewildo, AddAware, Spybot S&D, AVG, and smitRem to get rid of a blue screen on my background that said I had a spyware infection. I am now back to my normal back ground but I still get the popups. I saw in previous posts that in Hijack this the O20 Winlogon causes this I believe. If someone could tell me how to stop the popups I would appreciate it. January 21, 2005 alot of my popups now are coming witha webiste and a /yyy65 at the end of the webaddress. I do not know if that information helps or not.

Here is the Hijack this log:

Hi iceman. Sorry about responding so late but I was busy this weekend. I'm curious. Have you already checked items in hijack this? It's a pretty small log?

I see you have ASE Scheduler's spyware removal tool. I would recommend that you uninstall it. It is considered a rogue product.

See HERE

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe
http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

if you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe,
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."...then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.

I removed the ASE product and yes I have used Hijack this before. I had the spy sheriff problem with somehting controlling the background on my desktop saying I had an infection and through posts on this website I was able to eliminate that problem but was left with all of these annoying popups. All of the spy sherriff and popups are on my wife's computer so I am desperately trying to fix it and that is why I can only work on it once I get home from work. Thanks for all of your help thus far and here is the log that you requested:

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter. It will process then start. Your desktop and icons will disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, it will be ready for a reboot. Press any key to reboot. After the reboot notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!
If after the reboot the log does not open double click on it in the l2mfix folder.

Coachwife,

This is the first time I have logged on my computer and have not been bombarded with popups! I do not know if there will be more to do, but I can say that my wife already thanks you! Here is the l2mfix log and the hijack this will be below it. Let me know if there are things to kill or delete from the hijack this. thanks again,

Let's leave the thread open a few days to see if you stay clean. :)

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visitmonthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scannersweekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

Thanks for all of your help and so far so good on no popups. I have followed all of your advice except I can not get my windows update to work properly to show that I need to install SP2. When I click on Windows update all I get is a blank windows explorer screen saying done at the bottom like it is finished loading. When I search for SP2 on the MS site I get an error every time it tries to connect to the page. I do not know if you can help me with this or if it is a MS error right now.

Please go HERE (Microsoft website) using Internet Explorer (not Firefox or any other browser as they won't work)
  • Click on Windows Validation Assistant
  • Click on the Validate Now button.
  • Be patient while the ActiveX loads, do not click on any links.
  • Read the instructions on this page while it's loading. You will be prompted to install - click YES.
  • Enter your product key then click continue
  • When it says "Validation Complete" please click Continue to return to your previous activity
  • Copy what it says and paste it here.
