Please help! SpyAxe and I think spytrooper downloaded onto my laptop and then constantly appeared as warning bubble on toolbar. Have gone through all steps suggested yesterday and it appeared to fix problem. Home page was loading normally and bubble disappeared. However today my homepage is back to systemwarning.com and I am having trouble loading some sites including G2G). Newly downloaded anti-spyware keeps picking up spyaxe as well.

Log from Hijack this below as well as ewido log from yesterday.

Hello Kelvin and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

I note that you have a rogue programme installed; Spyware Cleaner. Please uninstall it and see this site for more details: http://www.spywarewa...nti-spyware.htm

Do you know this name and address, is it your ISP or PC supplier? Chunghwa Telecom Co. Ltd. Data-Bldg. 6F No. 21 Sec. 21 Hsin-Yi Rd. Taipei Taiwan 100

Firstly could you please disable Microsoft Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the icon (looks like an archery target) in the task bar and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) then click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

Also please disable Ewido Guard from running for the same reason. Open Ewido>Status and remove the Guard option. You may be required to reboot for the change to take effect.

When your PC has been declared clean, please only enable one of those two programmes to run in real-time. All others should be used as “on demand” scanners. Having more than one antispyware programme running in real-time will cause slowness and even conflicts.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
AntiPuper

Open AntiPuper by secured2k, and follow the on-screen instructions to sweep your PC for infections and clean your Wininet.dll file. When it has finished it will reboot your PC

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ntakl5/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ntakl5

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (if present):(click Start>Settings>Control Panel)

Spyware Cleaner

Please notify me of any other programmes that you don’t recognise in that list in your next response

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete this folder (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner\

Close Windows Explorer

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select Delete on Reboot
  • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mssearchnet.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvctrl.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpEF5E.tmp
C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner\SpywareCleaner.Exe
  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.

  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look.

Dear ţHîL©

Thank you very much for your help, time and advise. I have tried to follow it as best I could with a few issues. This are briefly explained below with answers to your questions.

I am the only one to use my laptop and should be the administrator. I have not been able to find the Spyware Cleaner programme so hope one of the many programmes downloaded has erradicated it! Chunghwa Telecom Co Ltd is my cellphone service provider in Taiwan.

I have stopped both Microspft Antispyware and Ewido. I also us as Computer Associates eTrust anti virus programme. Can this be used inconjunction with one of the above programmes?

I was unable to download Killbox as no access rights but did download CCLeaner and AntiPuper. When running AntiPuper I had a final message "Could not detect backup WININET.DLL file or McAfee Engine/DAT file to clean WINNET.DLL".

The http://ntakl5/ in my company home page, but I can add this in later. The company name is ZESPRI so zesproxy may also have been a legit file.

I was unable to log on in safe mode?? and as above could not find Spyware Cleaner to delete. Also did not run killbox as not downloaded.

I then ran CCleaner as instructed.

Hijack this log attached, how we looking

Hi ţHîL©, just a little more info in case it helps. ewido has been picking up the following file which keeps trying to load "Downloader.Zlob.do" and also "trojan.Agent.il". I also can't log into hotmail account, I just keep getting redirected to the logon page even after putting in my name and password.

Kind regards, Kelvin

Hello again Kelvin

Thanks for all the information.

Your HJT log looks good, but it sounds as though you might still be having problems.

Killbox is a back up to Antipuper and not strictly necessary, but I always like to double up on bad infections.

The Zlob infection is part of Puper and that appears to be gone. Ewido might be identifying it in your volume restore points which will be infected.

I'm not worried about the Wininet file being missing as your system should have one backed up and if not we can just download another.

The problem with Safe Mode sounds like it might be a rights issue. Please check in the Control Panel au User Accounts and make your account Administrator and any others Limited, if it is not configured that way.

RESTORE SAFE MODE

These are the two options for safe mode: During a boot, keep tapping the F8 key and choose Safe mode from the advanced menu or go to Start>Run>type in Msconfig>hit ENTER>Boot.ini and check SafeBoot>Apply, reboot.

If you boot to safe mode and a black screen, press ctrl, alt and delete at the same time. Click on file then new task(run...) In the Open box type msconfig and press enter. If msconfig opens click the boot.ini tab at the top then uncheck /SAFEBOOT Then click on the general tab at the top and make sure Normal startup is checked. Click Apply then OK. The computer should now prompt you to reboot. Hopefully you will be able to get into normal windows now.

RESTORE WININET.DLL

Click start>run and type command (cmd for NT).

Type:

copy c:\windows\system\wininet.dll c:\windows\desktop

Reboot. Scan the desktop folder with eTrust Web Scanner. When done, make sure the box is check for wininet.dll and click cure.

Reboot to command prompt and delete system\wininet and oleadm (oleext), then copy clean wininet from desktop.

del c:\windows\system\wininet.dll

del c:\windows\system\oleadm.dll (oleext.dll)

copy c:\windows\desktop\wininet.dll c:\windows\system

If all of that fails, go here and download the file:

Wininet.dll

CLEAN RESTORE POINTS

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Are you still having problems?

Hi ţHîL©,

I still haven't managed to get into safe mode but I don't think you wanted me to do anything specific with it so I will try working that one out later.

I went to the command prompt and typed in your line but it didn't find the file so replied "The system can not find the file specified". I downloaded the file from your link to my desktop and then did a search for "wininet.dll". Four files were found:

c:\windows\system32
c:\documents and settings\bezuidk\desktop
c:\windows\windows\softwareDistribution\Download\b68fe9ebdd665f78e33cbe020865a7b8\sp2gdr
c:\windows\windows\softwareDistribution\Download\b68fe9ebdd665f78e33cbe020865a7b8\sp2qfe

I assume the first is the real one, the second it the one I just downloaded and the other 2 are backups to the file I downloaded?

I ran the eTrust scan on the system32 and SoftwareDistribution folders and no viruses were found. I deleted the desktop file and emptied the recycle bin.

I also was able to do a reboot with the System Restore tab unchecked.

All seems to be working well. I am not getting my homepage redirected and have been able to log into hotmail. Thank you so much for you help. Please let me know if I need to do anything further with the winiet.dll file?

Many, many thanks, Kelvin

Hello again Kelvin

If Wininet was causing an error, you would know, it sounds as though all is well, in which case I am going to say....................................

Congratulations! :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well cause conflicts and slowness.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated. :)

Happy safe surfing and a Happy New Year to you Kelvin!
