Ever since I renewed my subscription to Norton Internet Security and downloaded the latest version, I have been having issues with spyware and adware on my laptop. I have run numerous virus scans and even purchased Spyware Eliminator with the hopes that it would take care of all the issues, but it didn't. I know of at least two files that it didn't detect but I need to remove -- eetu.exe and xhremy.exe, and I'm sure there are many more.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.

You have the peper trojan and it needs be the first to go. You will need to download a couple of tools to be used in just a little while.

Part of this fix is done online and part of it is done offline from safe mode.

This is a somewhat long instruction so take your time and DO NOT be on the net when doing this after the first step. It is vital that no step is missed and that the order is followed.

Open Ad-aware and check to make sure you have the most recent update.
If you have it make sure you have it set up like the instruction below.
Don't run it yet, we are just getting it ready. The link to download it is below if you don't already have it. Get it and set it up but don't run it yet.

Then,
Download this, save it to your desktop, but DO NOT run this yet.

Now, on to the fix. Step 1.
Click here to download the Peper removal tool. Save it to your desktop.

Double click on 'uninst.exe', let it run and terminate. You must be online to have this work and do not block any attempts for the program to connect to internet if your firewall asks permission. Run it twice with a reboot in between. It runs very quickly.

Close your internet connection.

Reboot to safe mode.

Safe mode boot up explained here if needed:

Step 2. and step 3. are done from safe mode.

Step 2.
While in safe mode Run "Newuninst.exe" by double clicking on it from your desktop. It was downloaded above.

Step 3.
While in safe mode Scan with AdAware to automatically clean up the remnants of the hijack. That part is Very important! Follow the Ad-aware set up and scan instructions just below.

Click the Start Button
Click on the link for Customize
in the Main Window under Scan Settings
click on the red X in front of Scan within archives to change it to a green check

Then click on the button on the left labeled Advanced
click on the red X in front of Move deleted files to Recycle Bin to change it to a green check
click on the red X in front of Include Environment Information to change it to a green check

Then click on the button on the left labeled Defaults
click on the Read current settings from system

Then click on the button on the left labeled Tweak
Click on the (+) in front of Scanning Engine to expand the group
click on the red X in front of Obtain Command line of scanned processes to change it to a green check
click on the red X in front of Run scan as background process to change it to a green check
click on the red X in front of Use permanent archive caching to change it to a green check

Click on the (+) in front of Cleaning Engine to expand the group
click on the red X in front of Disable manual quarantine if auto-quarantine is selected to change it to a green check

Click on the (+) in front of Safety Settings to expand the group
click on the red X in front of Reanalyze results after scanning . . . to change it to a green check
click on the red X in front of Write protect system files after repair to change it to a green check

Click on the (+) in front of Log File to expand the group
click on the red X Create Log File for removal operations to change it to a green check

Click on the (+) in front of User Interface to expand the group
click on the red X Remember window positions to change it to a green check
click on the red X Snap windows to desktop borders to change it to a green check
click on the red X Use gridlines in results list to change it to a green check

Click on the (+) in front of Web Update Settings to expand the group
click on the red X Create and save WebUpdate log file to change it to a green check

Click on the (+) in front of Misc settings to expand the group
click on the red X Dump details about unhandled exceptions to disk to change it to a green check

Then click on the button at the bottom right labeled Proceed then click the Next button to start scanning.

Once the scan is complete you'll have a flashing Bug and a brief sound to indicate scanning is complete and Adware is found. Click on the Next and then click on each of the empty boxes to the left of the found items under SCAN SUMMARY. Then hit the Next button. Then OK. This should clean your system of all the found nasties. When it's complete simply close the program until your next scan session. Always ALWAYS check for updates before very scan.

Be sure and Reboot when done.

Post a fresh hjt log for review, and some feedback please.

Thank you for all your help with the analysis of my last HiJack log and removal of the Peper trojan. I believe there are at least two other "germs" on my machine--eetu.exe and xhrmy.exe. I would love your help removing them. as well as any others.

Please set your system to show all files; see here for how to do this if you're unsure.

Press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.
Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

C:\windows\system32\yMeCv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Xhrmy.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Kim\Application Data\eetu.exe

Exit the Task Manager when finished

Close all programs down, leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against the following items:

C:\Documents and Settings\Kim\Application Data\eetu.exe
C:\Program Files\eSyndicate\esyn.dll
C:\documents and settings\kim\local settings\temp\qxHxS9pU.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

and run the following free, online virus scans:

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we'll take another look.

Thank you, again, for all your help getting my laptop virus, adware and spyware free. I deleted the previously recommended files and ran Housecall and Panda Active Scan. Both scans found infected files, some of which were deleted/disinfected, and many that were not. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to get any unwanted files off my computer.

P.S. I made note of the results from the Housecall scan and saved the report from the Panda Active Scan. Let me know if it would be helpful for me to post those, as well.
