Welcome zakanealii <_<

It's best to have Hijack This in its own folder. It may create a large number of backups that may be needed, and can be removed when finished.

Reboot in safe mode by tapping F8 at startup and selecting safe mode from the startup menu. Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Ok. I followed directions, and most of the allaboutsearching garbage is gone. Thank you!!! However, whenever I connect and open a browser window, something keeps causing another window to open with some of the following addresses:

Your computer has a number of spyware programs that we need to remove. For more info on spyware see the Spyware Tools link in my signature.

Let's start with a couple of free programs:
CWShredder is the first to run. Here's why: If a CoolWebSearch variant is indeed running on your system, it may actually prevent you from running spyware scans. It is smart enough to detect efforts to detect it, and stop them. Download CWShredder to your desktop or other location. Close all browser windows, double click the CWShredder icon to run, then click the Fix -> button. When finished, reboot and run Spybot Search & Destroy.

Spybot Search & Destroy Download and install. Start Spybot S&D using the "Spybot-S&D (easy mode)" link from your Start menu . Click the Search for updates button, if any are found then click the Download Updates button. After all updates are downloaded, click the Check for problems button. When the scan is complete, place a check next to anything marked in red, then click the Fix selected problems button. You may need to run Spybot S&D multiple times to remove all infections.

When finished, Reboot your computer. Finally, reply to this post with a new HiJackThis log so we can look for any nasties that may have been missed. <_<

Hi again. I have Spybot, and I have run it repeatedly. It has cleared up many problems. I also installed SpyBlaster before I posted. Now I have installed and run CWShredder like you said, and it indictated that it found one CWS variant, which it cleared up. I then reram Spybot, and it turned up IGetNet redirected host, and two other registry value changes, which it fixed. I cannot believe how fast everything runs now! Spybot used to take 15 minutes to run, but this time it took about 2 minutes! I rebooted again, and now I get the RUNDLL "An exception occurred while trying to run""C:\WINDOWS\system32\2hdsrch.cpy.dll",UMonitor" dialog window. Here is my new HJT log:

Ad-aware has just been updated to remove this one (VX2.BetterInternet). Be sure you have the latest reference file: 01R285 11.04.2004

Using Ad-aware: Open Ad-Aware and use the Check for updates now link. Download and accept the latest reference file. When finished click the Start button. When done scanning, the Abort button will change to Next. Click the Next button. Right-click in the Scanning Results window and click "Select all objects". Then click the "Next" button and confirm that you want to delete the selected entries.

When finished, Reboot your computer.

Let us know if it works <_<

Ok. I downloaded Ad-aware, and made sure I updated to the latest reference file: 01R285 11.04.2004. I ran the program, and fixed everything except two items, both VX2.BetterInternet files. One was a .dll which I tried to manually delete, and the other which is a registry file so I didn't even look for it. I rebooted again, reran the program, and got the same results again. And once I rebooted and reconnected, I was again treated to ad windows and search engines. What can I try next? Thanks.

I should clarify......after I followed your directions to the tee, Ad-aware said it could not remove these two files. So I set my Window Washer program to overwrite the .dll file, which it did. But after each reboot, that file was miraculously restored. <_<

Thanks for the help.

Well, roll up your sleeves Zach. <_< Currently, none of the standard aps will get rid of it, including: ad-aware, spybot, spy sweeper, cwshredder, killbox, hijackthis, etc... The latest Ad-aware removes some infections.

You have to manually remove this one, although the average user should be able to do this, if you're unsure of your ability to perform this fix, please stop. I'm sure Ad-aware will issue a fix in one of their next reference files (I know they're actively working on it).

First run ad-aware to see the name of the .dll, as it varies (changes its name) for everyone. You will see a line like this in your ad-aware logs:

Deep scanning and examining files
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
VX2.BetterInternet Object recognized!
Type : File
Data : aetiveds.cpy.dll
Category : Data Miner
Comment :
Object : C:\WINDOWS\system32\

The name (Data) will be diferrent, just write it down. Disconnect from the internet (unplug is best so you wont connect on re-boot). Then empty all your temp files from within your browser (Tools, Internet Options, Delete Temporary Internet Files). Next, you'll need your Windows XP CD. Put the Windows CD in the tray and reboot the computer...

-You should get a "press any key to boot from CD" message, so do that.

-It will load a bunch of files and eventually give you a menu where you can select the "Recovery Console" by pressing R... press R.

-You'll see your Windows Installation like "C:\Windows", type the number 1 and press enter.

-Administrator password is next: it's probably blank, so just press enter. Unless you've created one, in which case enter it.

-With all that done you'll end up with a C:\Windows> prompt

Now to delete these files:

At the command prompt type del c:\windows\system32\aetiveds.dll

and

del c:\windows\system32\aetiveds.cpy.dll

(Remember, these dll names may be different for you. Also, ad-aware may have only seen the .cpy one, the other is there as well and needs to be removed)

Then when that is complete, remove the CD from the tray and type Exit and it will reboot.

Rescan with Ad-aware and let it remove the registry entry. When done, reconnect to the Internet, and let us know how it works.

My computer is now free of VX2.BetterInternet! It appears to be free of any other detectable spyware too. <_< You are wonderful! Thank you!

Great job zakanealii <_<!

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use).

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.
Link to SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacools...areblaster.html

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.
