Ok this really sucks and I'm nearly at my wits end. I never use Windows Media Player, but I decided to try out CNN's new Pipeline service which requires WMP10. The install fails telling me that the service requires Media Player 10. Well, I'm sure I had MP10, but I go ahead and download it and when I try to install it, I get a message that tells me that my current installation of Media Player is more recent. Huh?

Ok so I go to remove my current version, which I notice is "Windows Media Player 10". I use "Add Remove Programs" to get rid of it and try a reinstall. Same message! So I find the folder and delete it. Doesn't work. I look for every instance of the software on any drive and remove everything I can find, and then, completely against my better judgement, I backup my registry and delete every instance of "Media Player" I can find. It still won't install! Apparantly I have some ghost version of the software that is more current than 10, but no where to be found on my PC.

I rebooted, looked again, and again... and a couple of hours later I'm completely lost. Does anyone have a clue why the program won't install. If I have to completely reinstall Windows, and all my apps to get this running I think I'll cry. I have everything just the way I want it now .... =(

If you would rather reply in an e-mail or have any tool that could fix this problem:

I removed the e-mail

Hi and welcome to Geeks to Go. Maybe the installer you downloaded and have been trying to install is corrupted in some way. Try deleting that, and then go to http://www.microsoft...&DisplayLang=en
validate, download and try again.
