I hvae Mcafee Virus software, as well as SpyBot, Ad-Aware Personal and several others, and only McAfee picks up this and gives me the message:

Threat: Httppost.exe
Item: Adware-favman
Path: C;\Windows\System32

It then "cleans" - and I assume to delete it, but it comes back.

Any ideas as to what it is and how to get rid of it?

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum.
